Lots of great conversations happening at SXSW EDU especially about how we’re still attempting to build a post-pandemic public school system that centers the learner. Loved hearing from innovative leaders in rural areas (Cory Steiner, Melissa Harris, Dr. Ellis) about how they're using all their communities' resources to change outcomes. The day ended on a high of thanks to the session moderated by Heather Harding about the need to build a stronger multi-racial democracy with school boards front and center! In many ways, there seem to be two conversations happening throughout the day- one about the future of education and another about its mythologized past and present. One conversation about where we’d all like to see schools get to with amazing new ed-tech tools, and another about the staggering inequality and lack of resources that year after year holds kids back. At a conference where there is no shortage of sessions about the impact AI/Edtech is going to make in the classroom, I was walking the trade show at one point and the only booth crowded (amongst a sea of newish ed-tech companies) was one the one giving away free pilot pens 🖊️ Considering the average teacher spends $500 out of pocket on classroom materials (only $250 is IRS deductible btw), it wasn’t too shocking but I found it ironic next to the empty edtech booths on either side. Schools are trying to go back to basics for post-pandemic recovery, but many schools still have further to just get to baseline operations. How do you see Edtech playing a role in closing or widening the gap that was present pre-COVID?

I am sharing with you a free resource for your teachers. Go to the website “The Innovation Destination” at https://lnkd.in/g-GuWeec. On the home page, scroll down to the four links. Click Here to Start Story-Game” will take you to the digital story-game, a children’s (gr.2-4) story that includes game elements. “Click Here to Learn More” and you’ll have access to all of the support materials developed for the story-game. A link to our promotional flyer, in case you’d like to share news of this unique and engaging set of resources to others. I attached the flyer to this email. A link to the Get SET! tool developed with funding from the Lemelson Foundation to help young children evaluate the resources they use throughout the invention process. The creators thought it was relevant to this project so they bundled it with the project resources. This is a great tool ready to use and important for any child learning to do research on line. There are also a set of unit/program plans and a best practice guide for educators who wish to develop programs around these resources or create their own resources. The authors and creators are very proud of these deliverables and now they are just trying to get the word out so people will use them.
