BFX took away some valuable learnings from the Thriving in Vertical Schools Research Forum:
- breakout spaces are essential for student wellbeing and thriving. Students often referred to these spaces as ‘reset’ or ‘retreat’ spaces
- students identified the distractions of noisy learning environments on teaching and learning.
Listening and engaging with the students has been incredibly enlightening, and we’re using this valuable research data to create environments where students can truly flourish.

Last week, C4IE hosted the Thriving in Vertical Schools Research Forum, and we're excited to share the video recording of the event.
A big thank you to all our participants, both in-person and online, for making the forum such a success. We also extend our gratitude to the speakers, partner schools, and event organisers for their contributions. We're thrilled to showcase how vertical schools are reshaping education in Australia.

In case you missed it, there was a really amazing session at #SXSWEDU last month entitled "Navigating a New Era in Higher Education: Facts About the Future" that's NOW AVAILABLE on YouTube.
Why do I think it's amazing and worth your time to watch (probably with a notebook and pen in hand)? Well, it's not just because I was one of the panelists and that I sat alongside my friends and colleagues Joe Sallustio, EdD of Lindenwood University, Philomena Mantella of Grand Valley State University, and Linda Battles of Western Governors University. I think everyone who works in, around, and on behalf of #HigherEducation ought to watch this panel discussion (complete with killer conversations sparked by audience questions) because it will help you rethink:
-- How we operationalize "student-centered" mindsets at colleges and universities
-- How we approach our own careers, including the skills we build and the mindsets we adopt, to become the kind of leaders that higher education is clamoring for right now
-- How we think about technology adoption and innovation in higher ed
-- How we blow up everything from the operating model, to the way we create policies, to the very words we use to describe our stakeholders
TUNE IN and tell us what you think. As we do our best to respond to (and lead) the many overlapping evolutions and revolutions underway in higher education today, the conversation about how to navigate this new era must continue.

Our sincere thanks to Western Governors University for sponsoring our debut appearance at SXSW. It was, as Joe and Elvin Freytes would say, "epic!" Thank you to Kathy Koza for leading the project, to Linda Battles for sponsoring us, and to Katie Ngo, Jamie Mollo, Matt Griffin, and others at WGU for making this one of my favorite speaking engagements ever. #DreamTeam

Educational Technology Collaborative's upcoming conference at Iowa State is a fantastic "third thing" you need to experience.
What's a third thing, you ask?
You probably know it and don't realize it. A "third thing" is something that helps you connect to another person without making the connecting the center of what you're doing. It's going to get a cup of coffee with a colleague, no agenda, and just getting to know them. I used to do this with my direct reports when we had more time (and we probably need to find that time again).
ETC's annual conference is a great way to make connections with your peers at other institutions while immersed in the experience of the conference. The Dinner with New Friends event is a perfect example of how they're leveraging that concept to help build a truly strong community of practice - with emphasis on the community of peers.
And while you're there, come by our Mentoring 101 session to learn more about how to build on those connections you're making!
The "third place" concept can be found in Quaker writing, and the link below is a Lutheran discussion of it. I don't really think of it as a religious practice, but this article explains the concept a bit better than I can.

How did Michelle's diverse background, from the Jellyvision creative team behind "You Don't Know Jack" to digital health solutions, shape her approach to fostering unity & collaboration at Unify America?
What is the Unify Challenge College Bowl, & how has it connected over 10,000 students across geographic & ideological differences for respectful conversations?
From staying curious to perspective-taking, what skills & norms does Unify America focus on imparting to students to equip them for bridging divides?
How are faculty incorporating the College Bowl into curricula across disciplines, & what benefits are they seeing in terms of student confidence & civic engagement?
With a new "deep dive" format focusing on a single topic like gun violence, how might Unify's model be adapted for healthcare students to build cultural competence?
