Is Social Media Ruining Dining Out? On TikTok, if I see a post about a restaurant near me with beautiful interiors or great-looking food, I’ll favourite it or share it with a friend. When I’m at a restaurant and unsure what to order, I’ll try to find photos of the dishes on Instagram. And like a true millennial, I almost always post a flat lay of my restaurant meal on Instagram Stories. But is all this capturing and looking at what’s been captured ruining my dining experiences? Was I missing the surprise and delight of my meals? Social media detracting from experiences isn’t a new topic but I’ve noticed it being talked about more — most notably earlier this year when The Row’s Autumn/Winter 2024 presentation in Paris banned phones. https://lnkd.in/gCjRd_gw

when you walk into a restaurant, it's still quite likely that someone might take your order down with a pen and paper. Restaurants have run well without many technological advancements for centuries. But recently, the hospitality industry as a whole has begun to embrace technology in many ways - from the way they accept reservations and manage their waitlists to the way you're able to pay your bill. Among all the tech advancements impacting dining, social media is causing visible changes to the restaurant experience, especially Instagram, the mobile photo-sharing service that has taken the world by storm in six short years. Prominent restaurants, like Per Se in New York and Fat Duck in the UK, discourage flash photography. Instead, most restaurants ended up embracing the fast-growing Instagram as a new marketing tool and a way to connect with their diners. It makes sense. https://lnkd.in/eJHch2kp don’t have a proper job. Continuing on the filming food and drink for a living theme...this is a throwback to our Spring Specials 2024 campaign. Each seasonal special menu throws up different challenges every time. The main one being find new and better ways to make each shoot more seasonal....even more spring, even more summer, even more autumn. We’ve experimented (and had great success) with different lighting techniques, whether it’s opting for harder light sources in the summer campaigns or using a fan and branches to create dapple light to create the illusion of al fresco dining. We’ve explored different props and dress setting and introduce more lifestyle elements to the videos to create a more authentic dining experience.bowenvisualhttps://https://lnkd.in/eMcBdgY4

The Art of Dining... or Should I Say, Dining for the Art? Food and beverage spaces have evolved — today, it’s about food styling and photo ops not just eating and drinking! I’ve been fascinated to hear from clients about customers who come in less to taste and more to capture the perfect shot. It’s like a modern “small game hunting,” with every meal or croissant (photo) serving as a prized moment for social media. Nothing illustrates this more than an Italian spot in Wan Chai, famous on the “Little Red Book” for a dish that’s become a viral sensation. Guests eagerly point and shoot but sometimes, they end up then sending it back — because it’s gone cold during their photo sessions! We’re in an era where taste alone doesn’t cut it; if your social media presence isn’t compelling — if your brand isn’t visually circulating like Bakehouse has been so successful in doing — then you're missing out. We've shifted from savoring a dish and reporting the tastes to seeing it as a static visual object, waiting to be caught and circulated to the world. After all, while the photos may not nourish us, for restaurant operators, this digital versioning of food has become the heartbeat of F&B. In our endless appetite for visual stimulation, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde: “It’s better to be photographed a lot than not be photographed at all.” #FoodForTheGram #FoodStyling #FNB #RestaurantLife #SocialMediaMarketing #DiningCulture #VisualFeast #HongKong

Find your phone-life balance: “Out of sight, out of mind” is a good start for controlling your phone cravings. If you have something important to do, put your phone in a drawer, another room, or anywhere you can’t see it or hear it while you try to concentrate. I practice this technique quite often to find phone-life balance. 📌 Leave the phone in another room. 📌 NO phone 45 minutes before bed. 📌No phone scrolling or emails for the first 60 minutes of the morning. 📌No phones at the dining table. #HarvardHealth #phoneetiquette #selfcaresunday #selfcarematters
