My latest blog involves my love affair with the flute that I played professionally for over half a century. The flute and its progeny (piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute) may not be considered the most important instrumental family in a symphony orchestra; but it is certainly one of the most versatile. Here is what I wrote (including some links to some beautiful music). https://lnkd.in/edmtemTb

Is there elitism in classical music, and how does it affect the perception of symphony orchestras? In this excerpt from a thought-provoking conversation, I explore the evolving role of the modern symphony orchestra. I had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Chen, Principal Trombonist of the Knoxville Symphony, who shared insightful perspectives from within the industry. This discussion is part of a broader series where I engage with professionals across the classical music world, exploring both the challenges and opportunities facing the art form today. Let me know your thoughts on this important topic!

I remember the "D" before the "I" and the "E" (i.e., diversity before it was tethered to inclusion and then to equity, aka DEI). In fact, as a musician I remember "living" diversity before anyone put a label on it. I discovered early in my musical journey not only what diversity is but what can be gained from it. Further, I have learned creative processes fueled by diversity that anyone can use to increase out-of-the-box thinking and innovation. If you want to learn the "diversity secrets" of 100 years of jazz and pop music, and the three creative processes you can use for yourself, Jazz Innovation is taking bookings for 2024 (60- or 90-minute presentations featuring a live quartet). https://lnkd.in/g4aPPHnj

This piece of music is Bringing Generations Together. Imagine four generations singing an old song together. Grandparents, parents, kids, and grandkids all sing, sharing something special. The song is like a time machine, carrying important ideas. When they sing, differences disappear. Music helps them share wisdom and values. Each generation adds something unique, creating a beautiful mix. Together, they teach us about tradition and how our actions affect the future. Music shows that we're all connected, despite our differences. We should treasure moments like these, learning from the past and creating a better future together. As the final notes fade into the ether, let us ponder: What melody will we pass on to the generations yet to come, and what harmonies will they add to our timeless song of life? #HarmonyAcrossGenerations #MusicalLegacy #UnityInMusic #GenerationalHarmony #LifeLessonsFromMusic #TimelessWisdom #FamilySingAlong #LegacyInSong #UnityThroughMusic #InterGenerationalBonds
