What a fantastic event was our annual #Allianz Asia Summit last week! And not just the Summit itself, but also the days leading up to it. Because over the course of 1.5 dynamic days, our Chief People & Culture Officers (CPCOs) from across the Asia-Pacific region gathered to connect, reflect, and shape the future of the People & Culture function. We used the workshop not just as an opportunity to celebrate our successes but also a time to look forward—aligning on a shared vision and strategy to elevate our People & Culture initiatives to the next level in 2025. As a team, we reflected on our achievements, discussed key areas for development, and aligned on strategic initiatives to implement in the coming year. We were delighted to have Bettina Dietsche, our Allianz Group Chief People & Culture Officer, join us for the entire workshop. Her insights into Group’s overarching strategy provided valuable guidance as we discussed our plans. It was also wonderful to welcome Vicky Drakousis for the second year in a row who shared more about Leadership and Talent Management at Allianz Australia. On the second day, we also had the pleasure of welcoming our Regional CEO Anusha Thavarajah, whose presence reinforced the strategic importance of People & Culture in driving business success across the Asia region. Her emphasis on the critical role our function plays in fostering growth and resilience motivated all of us to redouble our efforts and elevate our commitment to People & Culture. What I loved most about the workshop? Without a doubt the energy and engagement levels which were outstanding! The collaborative spirit and shared commitment to our goals were palpable, creating a space where everyone felt inspired to contribute their perspectives. I can’t wait to translate our discussions and agreements into concrete actions, together with our great People and Culture teams across the region, and specifically focus on our key themes for next year: Workforce Transformation, Leadership, Regional Collaboration, and Data & Systems. It is a fact that the biggest ratio of new investors coming into Malaysia and this region is from China. In fact, for the past 2 years, I conducted 4 investment mission to visit several cities in China against 1 to the US. That's 4 to 1 (4:1) ratio. . This month alone, NCER Malaysia received several groups from China visiting our Thematic Industrial Parks - #KRC and #CVIA. Not to mentioned different investment missions from China visiting the other parts in NCER Malaysia, especially in Penang and Kedah to scout for location for their next investment. . I also noticed that state IPAs such as InvestPerak, Malaysia, conducted a successful investment mission to China promoting the state aggressively especially the Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjong Malim, to strengthen the automotive ecosystem in Perak. . China with it's "China + 1" policy will no doubt continue to be Malaysia's biggest source of investment for the next few years. . I am looking forward to interact/network with many more interest from China to promote NCER Malaysia to them. The upcoming Malaysia China Summit 2024 scheduled from 17 - 19 December 2024 at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) is expected to be a place for everyone with interest in collaboration with China to meet. . 🌍 Collaboration for transformation: Reflections from the 2024 Ports Australia Biennial Conference Last week at the Ports Australia 2024 Biennial Conference in Hobart, collaboration emerged as the key strategic priority for the future of Australia’s ports and logistics sector. The takeaway for me was clear: Australian ports must collaborate to strengthen our national competitive edge, maximise shared value, and drive efficiency. Collaboration as a strategy: Recognising collaboration as an enduring strategy (not just a one-off tactic) is essential for port and logistics leaders, especially as we tackle the challenges of the energy transition and harmonising regulations. As Marika Calfas, Christine Holgate, Shane Walden and Wayne Johnson (GAICD) shared on Day 2, the interconnectedness of Australia’s freight supply chain, and the complexities of 'who owns what' within it, makes collaboration essential. This strategic approach is one we know well, having run numerous Collaboration Labs (CoLabs) across sectors globally to drive this outcome. Data collaboration for resilient networks: Going beyond simple data exchange, true data collaboration empowers ports to synchronise supply chains, breakdown silos, and build resilience. Meeting this challenge means addressing data ownership, cost, and governance barriers to create a more connected supply chain and logistics network for Australia. As Jens Meier and Allan Gray noted, there's a lot we could learn from others through knowledge exchanges, including around the collaboration efforts of the Port Halifax in Canada, as we explore our maritime single window. Shared stewardship for sustainable growth: Ports serve as stewards of economic trade and environmental sustainability, and play a vital social role in shaping the future workforce. Collaborative innovation is key here, particularly as automation and AI transform port operations and redefine skills required both on and off the port. This is a topic we will no doubt hear more about in the coming years Mike Gallacher GAICD!
