Saudi Arabia will build an $8.4 billion power plant at its Neom megaproject. It is erecting what could be one of the world's largest renewable energy plants in one of its futuristic Neom megaproject cities. The plan is to build a futuristic megapolis in the Saudi Arabian desert, which will feature a power plant as big as the megalomaniac dreams of its creators. The goal is to produce 4 GW of renewable energy to help produce up to 600 tons per day of green hydrogen. This megaproject has already reached the 8.4 billion needed to build it and could be listed by the end of 2026. GREEN HYDROGEN: LEADING THE WAY IN CLEAN ENERGY INVESTMENT As a cornerstone for a cleaner future, green hydrogen is 100% sustainable and versatile, offering potential for broad commercial, industrial, and mobility applications. The Middle East, known for its oil production, is now pivoting towards clean energy leadership. The UAE aims to produce 1.4 million tons of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031 as part of its national hydrogen strategy. Dubai’s "Producer & Hub" strategy could add AED 32 billion annually to the GDP by 2050 and create over 120,000 jobs. Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s clean energy company, plans to produce 1 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030, with projects in Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Morocco, and ambitions in Europe and the Americas. Additionally, the UAE has launched a pilot green hydrogen refueling station, "H2GO," operated by ADNOC Distribution, to test hydrogen-powered vehicles. Saudi Arabia is also advancing rapidly with its Neom plant, aiming to become the world’s largest green hydrogen producer with a target of 650 tones daily by 2026. These efforts will undoubtedly have a far-reaching impact, fostering a sustainable and resilient energy landscape for the future. It is an exciting time for the energy sector, and the progress being made is both inspiring and essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals. #sustainability #GreenHydrogen #Decarbonization #innovation #investments

I'm pleased to share that I will be participating in the #Hydrogen2024 event, hosted by Reuters, special thanks to Vlad Ionete for inviting me. I conducted simulations focusing in the #MENA region, so I can get my numbers ready. These simulations consider various critical factors, including the availability of renewable energy resources, electrolyzer and storage infrastructure requirements, and updated cost of capital. The findings of this analysis show a great potential for the region. Notably, Qatar emerges as a potential leader, exhibiting a strong potential for low-cost green hydrogen production, with LCOH ranging between 2.6 and 3.64 USD/kg. This is attributed to the abundant solar resources coupled with a supporting market environment. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) shows promising prospects, with LCOH ranging from 3.2 to 4 USD/kg. Similarly, Oman presents an LCOH spanning from 3.56 to 4.35 USD/kg, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) showcases potential within the range of 4.2 to 5.4 USD/kg. These results exhibit the significant role that the Gulf region could potentially play in the development of a globally competitive green hydrogen market. The findings not only consider the economic feasibility of green hydrogen production but also the regulatory support frameworks. #energytransition #hydrogeneconomy #strategyconsulting #projectfinance

In the latest piece of our #NewEnergyForesights service, our Director of #EnergyTransition, Cüneyt Kazokoglu and his team, are discussing the state of #hydrogen production and trade in the #UAE and #Oman. Of a total of around 30 hydrogen projects across the #MiddleEast, close to 20 are aiming to export #greenhydrogen (mainly utilising solar powerr) , with a total #export volume of about #3.5mmtpa by 2040 categorised as “firm” or “likely” within #FGE’s in-house database. In terms of the UAE, there is already a #hydrogenhub beginning to emerge in the region of #Ruwais, whereas in Oman the port of #Duqm is emerging as one of the Middle East largest hydrogen hubs, with a planned production of #2.6mmtpa of green hydrogen.

Among the strategic objectives of #SaudiVision2030, the Kingdom seeks to grow and diversify the economy and enhance talent development in critical industries. The two milestones that we communicated recently are testament to how we are contributing towards advancing those goals at GE Vernova, together with our customers and other stakeholders. Yesterday, we announced the successful rollout of the first H-class gas turbine unit to be installed in the Kingdom for aramco’s Jafurah Cogeneration Plant, and the first to be completed locally in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, at the GE Saudi Advanced Turbines (#GESAT) facility. We were honored by the presence of HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud, Minister of Energy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to commemorate this historic moment at GESAT. The achievement highlights our continued commitment to further localize and deepen the power sector’s value chain and capabilities in the Kingdom. Earlier last week, we had also announced a milestone gas turbine and services order with #SEPCOIII and ACWA Power’s wholly owned subsidiary, NOMAC. The Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 plants are expected to generate the equivalent #power to meet the needs of approximately 1.2 million homes in #SaudiArabia. As the Kingdom aims at generating half of its electricity from renewables by 2030, #gaspower is expected to represent the other 50% and will be critical to ensure #energysecurity and #reliability. Congratulations to our teams and partners for these important achievements! The 966, Episode #135 zeros in on Clean Hydrogen and Saudi Arabia with Rami Shabaneh, Senior Fellow, King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) joining me for an informed and comprehensive look at an industry that KSA is all in on. Rami co-edited the recently published, 'Clean Hydrogen Economy in Saudi Arabia, Domestic Developments and International Opportunities' available for purchase on Amazon or Routledge as well as Taylor & Francis. The book is a first-of-its-kind analysis of the emerging global hydrogen economy from the vantage point of one of the world’s biggest energy providers: Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom is optimally situated geographically between the major demand markets in Europe and North Asia, from where it can leverage clean hydrogen exports as a potential tool to become a player of strategic importance and successfully diversify its economy under its Vision 2030 program. In my discussion with Rami, he provides informed analysis of the "who," "what," "where," and "why" related to clean hydrogen development within and beyond Saudi Arabia. Coincidentally, this past week NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) initiated a major recruitment campaign for its world-leading green hydrogen plant as the project moves closer to its operational phase. The $8.4 billion facility, set to be the world’s largest green hydrogen production plant, is targeting full operations by the end of 2026 and aims to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen daily, potentially eliminating five million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Rami Shabaneh is the second KAPSARC expert to join The 966. In January 2022, for Episode #22, Adam Sieminski, who had just finished serving as President of KAPSARC talked renewable energy and the Circular Carbon Economy. Another terrific conversation you can listen to here. https://lnkd.in/euqaYyhk For the audio version of The 966 Episode #135 Clean Hydrogen and Saudi Arabia with Rami Shabaneh, KAPSARC, tune in here. https://lnkd.in/eA62uHWi https://lnkd.in/eyhPf6Xe
