Follow CityU iGEM and stay tuned for the latest updates on iGEM 2024! 🙌
The iGEM Competition: Innovation in Synthetic Biology🏆🧬 The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is an annual synthetic biology event involving university students globally since 2003. Participating iGEM teams are responsible for designing, constructing, and experimenting with new biological systems using standard molecular biology methods. Teams address complex problems and devise pioneering solutions. Through collaboration and creativity, iGEM teams can apply their concepts as beneficial community contributions to real life. In previous years, City University has participated in iGEM competitions as VarieCure (2021) and SeCure (2022), each winning silver and bronze medals. This year, 2024, we are returning to the competition even stronger under the name of BevaTech. Stay tuned 📯

EMBO Workshop "Autophagy Across Scales" We are excited to announce the EMBO Workshop on Autophagy Across Scales, taking place from September 23-27, 2024, in the beautiful setting of Sorrento, Italy. This event is co-organized by Antonella De Matteis from TIGEM, Italy, Helene Knævelsrud from the University of Oslo, Norway, and Sascha Martens from the University of Vienna, Austria. Autophagy, a fundamental cellular quality control process, has witnessed remarkable progress since the identification of Autophagy-related genes (ATGs) in the 1990s. These breakthroughs have given us a deeper understanding of how these genes orchestrate the encapsulation of cellular materials within autophagosomes, leading to their lysosomal degradation. Recent advances have shifted the focus towards understanding how ATGs interact with membrane trafficking and lipid transfer machinery at molecular and cellular levels. The ability to manipulate autophagy with precision is becoming increasingly critical for exploring its role as a stress-response pathway across various tissues and organisms. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to dive deep into the latest mechanistic insights and scalable tools, while emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to keep pace with the rapidly evolving field. Autophagy Across Scales is dedicated to bridging these vital developments, providing a platform for autophagy researchers to share knowledge and foster new ideas. #Autophagy #EMBO #Tigem #ScientificWorkshop

This week during the BREAKthrough_DN 2nd Annual Meeting in Bled, Slovenia, I had the opportunity to speak about my thesis work on the structure/function of L,D-transpeptidases catalyzing attachment of Lpp to peptidoglycan in Gram-negative bacteria. We believe that understanding Ldts molecular mechanism is the beginning of a novel strategy to overcome bacterial resistance based on using Ldts inhibitors to trigger outer membrane destabilisation. Being part of BREAKthrough_DN and being able to share my research with brilliant scientists makes me feel incredibly fortunate. Excited to see what comes next! #AMR #AntibioticResistance #BREAKthrough #Biochemistry

📢 Incredible new application of the #FluidFM OMNIUM platform 🚨 🌟🔬 Meet Spirostomum (or Spiro), a one-celled organism that contracts 14x faster than freefall. After triggering these little creatures a few times, scientists noticed something unusual: Spiros “remember” and stop reacting - a single-cell organism with memory! 🤯 🪂⚡. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology want to understand how, so they turned to FluidFM OMNIUM for single-cell biopsies. We successfully took biopsies of living Spiros, which are up to 100-400 times larger than an average mammalian cell, and guess what? Success! 🎉 Two amazing outcomes: ✅ Our work demonstrated that the OMNIUM platform can handle these challenging, large-dimension cells. ✅ Spiros tolerate the biopsy procedure without harm. 🧫✨ Learn more about FluidFM technology👉 https://lnkd.in/gT8Fchi4 Stay tuned for more exciting updates from the world of single-cell science! 🌍🧫 #SingleCell #Biotech #BiotechInnovation #CellularBiopsy #Spirostomum #ScientificDiscovery #TeamworkWins #ResearchBreakthrough #BiotechJourney #GameChanger #CellMemory #FutureOfResearch #transcriptomics #NGS #Spiro #RNAseq #scRNASeq
