It's Te Wiki o te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week! This year's bilingual poster features ngā hekaheka / fungi 🍄 𝗛𝗲 𝗮𝗵𝗮 𝘁ē𝗻𝗲𝗶 𝗵𝗲𝗸𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗸𝗮? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘂𝘀? Our great forests of Tāne-mahuta hold a treasure trove of fungi (hekaheka), many only found in Aotearoa. Certain kinds of fungi were traditionally valued by Māori, like āwheto (vegetable caterpillar) which was burned and used to make ink for tā moko / tattooing. Fungi, plants, and animals live together and all have important roles to play in our ecosystem. Fungi like hakeke feed on dead wood causing it to rot and returning its nutrients to the soil. Sadly, some fungi have lost their place to live or have been affected by other changes and are now rare. Rakus is a remarkable Sumatran orangutan who astounded scientists with his extraordinary healing abilities! 🦧 So he (& all Pongo species) are my #SpeciesOfTheWeek . In a groundbreaking discovery, Rakus was observed in Indonesia's Gunung Leuser National Park self-medicating with a plant paste (Allamanda cathartica) to heal a wound on his cheek. 🍃 This is known as zoopharmacognosy. In captivity, these intelligent creatures have showcased their adaptability by developing new communication methods, including a unique language of gestures & facial expressions. In a Swiss zoo, orangutans amazed researchers by creating seven distinct signals, demonstrating their capacity to learn & innovate in novel environments. But orangutan brilliance extends beyond communication – it's also seen in their capacity for empathy & friendship. At an American wildlife sanctuary, Suriya forged an unlikely bond with a stray dog named Roscoe, showcasing the deep emotional connections orangutans are capable of forming. 🐶💕 Furthermore, orangutans like Naong in a Swedish zoo have displayed advanced cognitive abilities, participating in studies such as affective forecasting. In 2020, Jumping spider genus Vailimia has been recorded for the first time in India. We described two new species: Vailimia ajmerensis and V. jharbari from Rajasthan and Assam in India. John Caleb Busamatary P, Caleb JTD, Das S, Jangid AK, Kalita J & Brahma D (2020). First record of the genus Vailimia Kammerer, 2006 from India, with the description of two new species (Araneae: Salticidae: Plexippina). #pollinators The blue tiger butterfly, scientifically known as Tirumala limniace, is a species found across South Asia and Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Nymphalidae family, specifically the group known as crows and tigers or danaids. This butterfly exhibits social migration behavior in southern India. It can often be seen gathering alongside other species like Danaus genutia, Tirumala septentrionis, Euploea sylvester, Euploea core, and Parantica aglea. At higher altitudes, it is known to associate with Parantica nilgiriensis on Crotalaria plants. As well as larvae of butterflies typically consume plants belonging to the Asclepiadaceae family.
