Once again via Swiss Ramble. After I did a podcast a few years ago, I was contacted for a piece of work by a PE investor who wanted some football due diligence, before investing in FC Brugges. The main issue obviously became clear, and can be seen in these numbers. The risk was in the volatility of qualifying for the Champions League and being able to constantly sell-on players. This is true for Brugges as it is for almost all clubs. Same for Tottenham as it for ACMilan, for Celtic. One is making an investment accepting huge volatility, like injuries, player whims, agent strategies to run down a contract, a bad ref decision. To say nothing of relegation. I continue to believe that all this disqualifies European football from being considered as a serious business and asset class. It’s speculation. Not investment. I wonder what happens if one day the whole transfer system around fees is cancelled in the courts. Like Bosman in the day, or Diarra now. Good luck.
