Treat People Well LESSON FROM LEVITICUS FOR TODAY Treat people well because they are God's people and because God says so. These words describe the priestly and deuteronomic laws of Israel to me as I read them: Fairness Equity Compassion Equality Patience Justice Respect Reverence Restraint The holy, unique, sacred people who follow the code of holiness in Leviticus and the laws of community in Deuteronomy respect the rights of others and retrain themselves in the full exercise of their rights to retribution for themselves. YHWH gives the particulars of these laws to the people of Israel in historical context and they are uniquely for Israel. However, they point to principles and concepts that Israel demonstrates to the whole world and for the whole world. Read Text on Leviticus 25:35-55 in comments. Notice two more things: The people belong to God, YHWH for God has redeemed them. YHWH reminds them, "I am the Lord your God." So, God says to treat people well because they are God's people, beloved and redeemed and do it because God says so and it is the unique, holy, and sacred character of God that is at the core of the issue and God deserves to be obeyed.
