Consistency is a fundamental concept in distributed systems, particularly in data-intensive applications. However, achieving consistency can be a complex task, especially when dealing with high-availability and high-performance requirements. This video delves into the trade-offs involved in designing consistent data-intensive applications, exploring the different consistency models and their implications on system design. Consistency in distributed systems is often compromised for the sake of availability and partition tolerance. However, achieving strong consistency can be critical in applications that rely on data integrity, such as financial transactions or real-time analytics. This talk will examine the different consistency models, including eventual consistency, strong consistency, and weak consistency, and discuss the trade-offs involved in choosing a consistency model. UID-based consistency models, such as Paxos and Raft, are designed for high-availability and high-partition-tolerance applications. However, these models require careful coordination and can lead to performance overhead. Last-write-wins consistency models, such as Apache Kafka, are designed for high-throughput and high-availability applications, but may require additional mechanisms for conflict resolution.
