The SYD-MEL flying route is the most lucrative in the world. Anyone surprised? I've had stints of regular work travel between SYD-MEL, SIN-SYD, LAX-SYD and LAX-JFK/EWR/LGA and this graphic looks about right. The fact that SYD-MEL route generates more revenue than any other route shows how much pricing power Australian domestic airlines have. I'm guessing Qantas has top market share.

Thank you Adam Bishop and team at Travel Daily Australia for publishing my thoughts on the complexity of the new Qantas distribution model. It's a subscription link. If you don't have a subscription (get one!) but in short I talk about the irony that this distribution model is going to end up costing QF more, as opposed to what most airlines try and achieve with NDC. https://lnkd.in/d64mPmnt

Airline NDC (New Distribution Capability) is changing the way airlines sell their services by giving them more control and the ability to offer personalized deals directly to customers and travel agents. This reduces their reliance on traditional GDS systems, which have long acted as middlemen. While GDS companies are adapting by integrating NDC into their platforms, it’s creating new challenges, like making it harder for travel agents to compare options across systems. The future will depend on how smoothly the industry adjusts to these changes. #airline #ndc #gds #sabre #travelport #amedeus

Qantas implements three tiered #distribution model focused on #NDC from 1 July 2025. Qantas Airways, the Australian #airline today announced a major revision to its #distribution #strategy from mid next year. At a high level, the move appears reminiscent of Lufthansa Group's strategy for NDC distribution. #Travel #sellers will be able to choose between 1) fully #surcharged #EDIFACT content, 2) "Standard" NDC content which will come with a reduced surcharge when accessed via a GDS and 3) "Premium" NDC content, which will always be unsurcharged. Qantas says it has secured new #GDS #agreements supporting NDC distribution with Amadeus, Sabre Corporation and Travelport.

It’s great to see that Delta Air Lines will be resuming Tampa International Airport (TPA) to Amsterdam flights this coming winter, with a daily A330-300 service. It last flew the route between May and October 2019, when it had five weekly to a daily 767-300ER operation. Interesting that it'll now apparently be winter seasonal. When it flew in those six months, it carried approx. 50k roundtrip passengers (per the US DOT T-100) with a seat load factor of 80%. Around 44% of pax transfer to fellow transatlantic joint venture partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’s flights (per OAG Traffic Analyser). Unsurprisingly, Germany was by far the top market, with Frankfurt the leading O&D. Amsterdam was Tampa’s third-largest European point-to-point market when Delta operated, behind Gatwick and Heathrow. It was a time when Heathrow didn't have non-stop flights (it now does because of Virgin Atlantic). In all, Delta’s Schiphol service captured approx. 12% of the European market from Tampa in the six months. #airlines #aviation

First it was Turkish Airlines, then Air Transat (which reached agreement before leaving the system), and now Frontier Airlines out of Sabre Corporation's #GDS (https://lnkd.in/gAkxW99D). What has changed to cause this rash of content outages? Let's set Turkish aside for the moment, as I believe something changed *at Turkish* and I question their calculus. But as to the latter two, we may be starting to see a pattern emerge. LCCs have to sell low fares at the lowest possible cost and, when they entertain the notion of selling in indirect channels, they do so almost exclusively online. The GDSs lost their gatekeeper position in online travel a long time ago, making it realistic for a true ULCC to eschew GDS distribution in favor of an #NDC-only indirect channel strategy. At some point, more LCCs may give the GDSs a quizzical look, turn their backs, and simply walk away from paying outlandishly high fees for volume they could otherwise grab for themselves via NDC and/or their own direct channels. EDIFACT fees cannot increase endlessly unless one buys into the notion that the customer will happily pay an infinitely high surcharge. Hat tip, Jay Boehmer of The Beat: https://lnkd.in/ggpKMET8

It seems if you want to get somewhere on time, Virgin Australia (ASX:VAH) is now your #airline of choice. Virgin has overtaken Qantas Group Ltd as Australia's most punctual airline, achieving an 81.4% on-time performance in April, surpassing #Qantas' 78.4%. This marks a significant turnaround for Virgin, which was last in punctuality in December and in the early months of 2024. #Jetstar lagged behind with only 74.9% of its flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule. Virgin Australia (ASX:VAH)’s chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka attributed the improvement to an intense focus on performance, achieving a return to pre-COVID service levels. “The post-COVID recovery has been challenging for the #aviationindustry, but it is promising to see reliability and on-time performance improve across Australian airlines," Hrdlicka said.
