𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿 Worried About the Cost of Food While Traveling? Traveling can be an exciting adventure, but the cost of food can quickly add up, especially if you’re visually impaired and need accessible dining options. The good news is that you can enjoy delicious meals without breaking the bank. With a few smart strategies, you can savor local flavors and stick to your budget. At Vision Loss Travel, we’re here to help you enjoy your culinary experiences while keeping your expenses in check. Here are some tips to eat well on a budget during your travels. One of the best ways to save money on food is to cook your own meals. If your accommodation has kitchen facilities, take advantage of them. Visit local markets and grocery stores to buy fresh ingredients and prepare simple, healthy meals. This can save you a lot of money compared to dining out for every meal. When you do eat out, look for local markets and food stalls. These places often offer delicious and authentic meals at a fraction of the cost of tourist restaurants. Street food is not only budget-friendly but also provides a great way to experience the local culture and cuisine. Take advantage of meal deals and special offers. Many restaurants offer lunch specials, early bird discounts, or set menus that provide great value for money. Look for these deals and plan your meals accordingly to make the most of your budget. Something for this feel good Friday... Have you heard of The Restaurant Of Mistaken Orders? It's right there in the title - things may go wrong - but why? Because the waiters and waitresses in this Japanese pop-up restaurant all have dementia. The concept is the brainchild of television director, Shiro Oguni, to raise awareness in a country that is predicted by 2025 to have one in five people affected by the disease. It came from an encounter between Oguni and a group home of people with dementia. “Like everybody else, my awareness of dementia at first tended towards negative images of people who were ‘radically forgetful’ and ‘aimlessly wandering about.’ But actually, they can cook, clean, do laundry, go shopping and do other ‘normal’ things for themselves. Close-up, they might go a little off course now and then…” After ordering a burger, he got a plate of gyozas. “As everybody around me was eating with such gusto, I felt quite muddled. I wondered if perhaps it was me who was in error.” Oguni says, “but it’s just a mistake. Given that kind of tolerance, the dining scene can become relaxed and delightful.” There's a note on their website that I just love: "Everything on our menu is delicious and one of a kind. This, we guarantee. We hope this feeling of openness and understanding will spread across Japan and throughout the world" What a beautiful concept, especially considering that there are currently estimated to be 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is projected to rise to 1.4 million in 2040. There are a few similar versions throughout the UK but this is the kind of out-the-box thinking I admire.
