Two years ago, something incredible began. In a small community where single mothers worked tirelessly in a stone quarry just to put food on the table, the dream of a brighter future seemed distant. But at NMF Uganda, we saw the potential in the children of these hardworking mothers. We believed that with access to education, their lives could be transformed. That's how Trey Junior School was born;a non profit school created to give these children a chance. What started with a handful of students has now grown into a school of 208 children, from baby class to primary five. These children are not just numbers; they are stories of hope, resilience, and a future waiting to be written. But our journey doesn't stop here. The growing number of children and the expanded reach of our services beyond Wakiso means we urgently need to expand the school. We are raising funds to purchase more land and build more classrooms up to primary seven, establish a boarding section, and construct essential facilities like a kitchen, canteen, storage spaces, recreation areas, a sick bay, and a library. At Ashwini Charitable Trust, the children are all first generation learners. Their parents never went beyond middle school. Employment opportunities are increasingly knowledge and skill based. Hence, these parents struggle to get work and keep the kitchen fires burning. We need  just one generation to get educated and break that cycle of poverty and want. Once we manage to achieve this, then the  future generations will automatically go to schools and colleges, and would be able to follow their dreams. It takes one generation of literates to build that foundation, so that the future generations will never need to depend on an NGO. Major factors responsible for non-enrollment and school dropout are severe hunger, extreme poverty and homelessness. Digital poverty is when a person does not have access to the internet through a personal device. This, in this day and age, is incredibly important as, for example, the majority of jobs are advertised online. It also gives people access to all of the resources needed for completing higher education. This is why our gifting programme is so important. It allows us to donate laptops to people facing digital poverty, reducing the number in Scotland.
