𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧-𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬 Exciting advancements in solar technology! The latest efficiency record for perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells now stands at 34.6%, achieved by Longi in June 2024. This surpasses previous milestones, including one set by KAUST earlier this year, and marks a significant leap beyond the Shockley-Queisser (S-Q) limit for single-junction silicon cells. Why does this matter? Silicon-based solar panels, which dominate 95% of the market, face efficiency limits due to optical, thermal, and electronic losses. The best single-junction silicon cells reach about 26.8% efficiency, while the theoretical maximum is 32%. Perovskite-silicon tandems offer a promising solution to break through this barrier and transform the future of photovoltaics. The concept behind these cells is simple: each material captures a specific range of sunlight, maximizing the overall efficiency by using more of the solar energy that hits the cell. Tandem solar cells, with their ability to combine two absorbing materials, are an exciting development for commercial applications.
