The picture shows the bacterium that accompanied us at our trade fair two weeks ago. My daughter Janina Snaidr is wearing the costume, and it was great fun! Daughter as a bacterium? This combination makes more sense than you might think at first. Microbiology is my life. Ever since I saw a colony of the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri for the first time during a practical course at university, I have been driven by the idea of working with microorganisms. This drive led to the founding of vermicon AG in 1997 and the founding of Magnospira GmbH & Co. KG 20 years later. While the former company focuses on industrial applications, the latter aims to inform consumers about the benefits of microorganisms. For me, the idea of a family business was the driving force. Building up a company for a few years and then selling it may work for many, but for me, it was out of the question. “Corporations think in years, family businesses think in generations.” I heard this saying many years ago at an event organized by a family business, and there is a lot of truth in it. Family businesses are not about making a quick profit. Rather, it is about combining passion with vision, customer needs with sustainability, and planning with patience. A family business IS like a family. Not only because many family members work in it, but because the atmosphere in the entire team is always familiar and friendly—even in stressful times. A family business is also inextricably linked to your own family and is often the dominant topic at the dinner table. My children were able to learn from the very beginning what it means to take responsibility and take risks. They were able to experience how important it is to be passionate about a vision. They saw successes and defeats and a never-ending mountain of work. Work-life balance—we don't know this term. Work is life and vice versa. Both are one and a real joy. The famous Stoic Seneca said: “It is not because it is difficult that we do not dare to do it, but because we do not dare to do it that it is difficult.” Sometimes you have to act without having planned everything down to the last detail. Jumping without a parachute. That's why I was delighted when my second daughter Laura Snaidr joined me in the management of Magnospira GmbH & Co. KG in January 2024. The daughter as a bacterium? Yes, of course, because bacteria are my family too. And always will be. #bacteria #microorganisms #familybusiness

This day, five years back, at the ISEAL Global Sustainability Symposium at the Hague, we launched Evidensia. It emerged from our collective understanding that we needed to find a place where those who used sustainability systems and market tools could find information about their impacts. Where and how do we even begin to address this problem? After three years of dialogue, research, trials and tests, Evidensia was launched in 2019. Our vision was to create an open access, free and trustworthy public good that served as a repository for credible research on the impacts of market-based tools and a platform to share and learn from such research. Five years on, we are proud that the Platform lives on and is growing in its reach and use to ensure sustainability action is driven by information and evidence. Over this time, we've learnt a lot about what it takes to maintain and grow a platform like this, but why it continues to play an important role in the sustainability space. For all the actions we take, it always comes down to impact and effectiveness - what evidence do we have of the change market-based tools are driving on key sustainability issues. And how do we know where they need to improve. This will continue to be our vision as we look ahead to the next five years. Evidensia would not be possible without the passion, intellect, commitment and efforts of so many individuals and organisations. A huge thank you to everyone who has played a role - small or big - in helping us take off on this journey but also keep us grounded. We deeply appreciate the support from partners at SECO Economic Cooperation and Development Global Environment Facility CGIAR Ford Foundation for helping ensure Evidensia remains a public good. And we look forward to delivering even more value to businesses, policy-makers and practitioners access, use and learn from research and evidence.
Today we're celebrating Evidensia's 5th Birthday! Evidensia was co-founded in 2019 by ISEAL, Rainforest Alliance, and WWF. Since our launch, we've developed a rigorous evidence taxonomy, hosted 1,450 resources on the impact of market-based sustainability systems, organised over 50 learning events, completed 6 systematic reviews, and much more. Evidensia is a collaborative effort. Without the diligent work of so many people, the platform would not be where it is today. Here are just some of the people and organisations we would like to thank for making Evidensia a success. Martin Peter, Katrin Oswald, Deanna Newsom, Margaret Arbuthnot, Jeffrey Milder, Melissa D. Ho (she/her), Gregory Sampson, Axel Marx, Gill Petrokofsky, Rachael Garrett, Carolina Gonzalez, Giel Ton, Nick Salafsky, Kriss Bennett, Matt Leach, Nicole Cook, Arabella Lewis-Smith, Lavinia Gasperini, Pascale Bonzom, SECO Economic Cooperation and Development , Global Environment Facility, CGIAR, UNDP Food & Agricultural Commodity Systems, Vidya Rangan, Rita Méndez Gil, Kristin Komives, Poppy Hall, Liliana Petkova, Matthew Stancliffe Bird, Naomi Black. Thank you!

☀ It was great to participate in the consortium meeting of the GIANT LEAPS project organised by VTT in Helsinki, Finland. It was great to meet the partners again after the previous meeting a year ago in Barcelona. 🎓 We presented the update on WP8 on communication, dissemination, exploitation, and education. Most important topics are the policy briefs we have been drafting the past months, and the educational material that will be developed in the year to come. 🥗 It was great to hear that each partner is highly motivated to contribute to make impact, i.e. to promote the protein transition. #dietaryshift #proteintransition #alternativeproteins #sustainability
🦗🥩🌱 The Giant Leaps consortium met in person for its second annual meeting in Helsinki, Finland, hosted by VTT. Thanks to the VTT team, particularly to Nesli Sozer, leading the food processing Work Package, for coordinating this event. The Giant Leaps project focuses on accelerating the transition from animal-based to alternative proteins to promote a food system based on sustainability, health, and accounting for consumer preferences and acceptance in Europe. The project involves research on alt protein functionality, method development, and stakeholder engagement to optimize future diets and reduce the environmental impact of food production. During this two-day meeting, the different WPs presented their results and future work and discussed collaboration initiatives within the consortium and with external institutions. We look forward to meeting again in person next year in Sofia, Bulgaria... in the meantime keep an eye out for conferences, webinars (and everywhere in between) where Giant Leaps partners will present their work! Half-time for the Horizon Europe project GIANT LEAPS project on Alternative Proteins, with an energetic, smart and hard-working team from around the world. Literally tons of high quality results are currently being generated by our Work Package 4 #Digestion and #Health, lead by myself André Brodkorb and Chiara Nitride. Alternative proteins and protein products from: chickpeas, lentils, fava beans, oats, rapeseeds, insects (Bugging Denmark), bacterial proteins (Solein) and microalgae (green and yellow chlorella GreenCoLab), going from #invitro all the way to human #invivo studies. Our first manuscripts on (i) antinutritional factors and (ii) the digestion of microalgae close to submission. 🌿🚁 The Great Cannabis Edible Shower of 2024! 🚁🌿 Imagine this: A sunny day at Happy Herb Farms' annual "Buds and Brews" festival, buzzing with excitement. Our drone operator, maybe a bit too happy from one too many THC brownies and lost control of the drone. The drone swooped down, clipped the tent’s supports, and in a scene reminiscent of a high-stakes action movie, the tent collapsed resulting in the most unexpected event of the year: a candy rain of cannabis edibles! Boxes of Granny Ganja’s meticulously packaged cannabis-infused gummy bears, brownies, and cookies were sent flying through the air, creating a colorful, chaotic shower of sugary treats. Festival-goers, initially startled, quickly embraced the moment, scrambling to catch the falling edibles. Some even made makeshift nets out of their tie-dye shirts. However, this impromptu candy rain resulted in several guests consuming significantly more edibles than they intended, leading to a few comically over-the-top reactions. One gentleman, convinced he had developed the ability to communicate with squirrels, spent the rest of the day attempting to organize a "Squirrel United Nations" in the nearby oak grove. Another attendee, inspired by the sheer absurdity of the situation, began performing interpretive dance moves, believing he was auditioning for an alien talent show. What We Learned: Always have a sober drone operator. Ensure insurance policies cover "Unexpected Edible Dispersal." Festivals can double as impromptu talent shows! We’re grateful for our insurance partner, Weed Ross who helped us navigate this sweet chaos. Here's to more fun (and controlled) events in the future! 🎉 ***The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person, squirrel or event. However, it does show you why you should call me for your cannabis insurance*** #CannabisIndustry #FestivalFun #UnexpectedAdventures #InsuranceStories #EdibleShower #HappyHerbFarms #Cannabis #CannabisInsurance #WeedRoss
