'Community arts became my initial quest in the 1980’s as a reaction against the commercial art world. How can art participate in a functional way to connect not just art educated people, but our overall communities on issues affecting them that have meaning and purpose. Can we just speak about these issues or can we actually have it be transformative in some way to actually lead to some kind of social or policy change within the community by bringing people together and getting them working together.' Felicia Young runs Earth Celebrations, a non-profit organization engaging communities to effect ecological and social change through the arts. Felicia has developed a methodology utilizing the arts and the theatrical pageant art form, form of street art - along with civic engagement and activism. She’s a 3rd generation New Yorker, with deep roots in the City of New York, as well as much inspiration from the festivals, ceremonies, and mythic dramas from her mother’s native land of India. Now I’ve never met Felicia in person but I know about her work through years of viewing social media such as the YouTube video Celebrations Director Felicia Young - 30 Years of Cultural Organizing for Ecological Changem which is linked in the episode notes. I was moved by Felicia’s response to a question I ask all of my guests about how to prepare for the end of the world as we know it and in particular the issue of doom and gloom and defeatism: 'I don't just see it as doom and gloom because I have been directly involved in 30 years of local people who've just moved forward with implementing these solutions without waiting for the government … My involvement has always been at the grassroots level. And on that, I'm encouraged, but where I'm afraid is the overall political system where we see our elected officials owned by the industries that are doing all of the polluting and controlling the bigger picture, but are we just going to be paralyzed because they're doing the wrong thing and not go ahead with what we know is right?' The language of art is universal I recently had the privilege of visiting the Royal Academy of Arts on a social day out with the better half. I had no idea what event or exhibition was taking place and stumbled upon In The Eye of The Storm: Modernism in Ukraine (1900’s - 1930’s). I wouldn’t have typically signed up for for this exhibition on the assumption it wasn’t for me, but I’m so pleased that we did. Here are my key takeaways: * The language of art is universal - it may not use words but can be understood by anyone willing to take the time to perceive the message or story’s of triumph, loss, aspiration, fear and love amongst others. * Preservation of culture is innate - people across the globe value their heritage, traditions, history and stories. In some cases, they will pay the highest price to protect it for the next generation. * I will never grasp Cubism and that’s ok - these fancy terms and isms mean nothing to me and the same probably applies to most of us. We either like it and appreciate it or we don’t. There were about 65 pieces on display but the canvas that resonated with me the most was dated 1929 by Viktor Palmov (1888 - 1929) entitled “1st of May”. Funding of the arts has historically been complicated. Many museums have regained their visitor numbers as per pre-Covid-19, but visitors don't fund the majority of what is needed to keep museums open. Will the next generations philanthropic gaze produce enough funds to keep 'the arts' seen and heard? #art #music #museums #culture #funding #legacy #humanities "The perpetually embattled realm of museums received a rare bit of good news this week. In its annual Visitor Figures survey, the Art Newspaper reported that many of the world’s top museums have seen their visitorship return to pre-Covid-19 levels." However, "there is arguably greater financial trouble for museums looming in the future...the majority of this philanthropy comes from an aging cohort—for all the flack boomers get, they’ve played a substantial role in funding the arts. As the Art Newspaper pointed out in January, as this demographic begins to die out, younger members of the donor class have failed to pick up the slack."

"Bodies of Work", an exhibition at the Harvey Milk Photo Center featuring works by KatinKa Herbert, will be on display at Harvey Milk Photo Center from March 2, 2024 -April 20, 2024 and will be free and open to the public. This exhibition explores the commodification of athletic bodies. Bringing two projects into dialogue, KatinKa Herbert delves into the lives of Mexican wrestlers and Cuban athletes. In doing so, her images capture the dilemma of physical performance: a tense relationship between economic necessity and the human form. While some athletes experience their bodies as vehicles of financial stability and international travel, many grapple with unpredictable incomes, visa barriers, and the looming threat of career-ending injuries. As such, ‘Bodies of Work’ is a study of precarious labor. Here, lives that are ordinarily defined by movement are frozen in the photographic frame. Their muscles resonate with tension and potential; their poses strain under personal and political weight.

𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. In today's world, we as artists have an important role to play. Faced with increasingly complex issues intertwined with colonialism and extractivism logic, it's essential to ask different questions and to learn to empathize with anyone suffering amidst these problems. These skills of questioning and perceiving the invisible are at the core of what we acquire in artistic training. They are the skills needed to save the world. True collaboration between multiple disciplines of knowledge and expertise will be necessary, as well as the valorization of indigenous knowledge, crip knowledge, teachings of nature, and experiential knowledge from communities seeking equity. These knowledges will form the foundation of a more just future. My contribution to the National Theatre School has come to an end, as the new NTS leadership has chosen to revert to a more conservative vision, less engaged, and less focused on social innovation. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫. After nearly 15 years of contributing to major cultural institutions, this departure gives me the freedom to explore roles where my skills, values, and passion align even better. Recently, my artistic practice has been taking up more space, and I have been working as an independent consultant with cultural and community organizations that share my values and appreciate the depth I bring. Over the years, my sister Maude Levasseur and I have developed interests at the intersection of art and social justice that have continued to grow. We are excited to announce the birth of our new collective: Place Courage. This collective will be a space where creativity and social engagement come together to inspire change.
