Did you know that the average transit-reliant New Orleanian can only reach 12% of the regions jobs in 30 minutes or less? Many riders spend over an hour each way on their daily commute. It wasn't always this way and it doesn't have to remain this way. This morning I had the opportunity to attend a breakfast briefing titled, "Why Public Transit Must Grow: The Case for Funding Greater New Orleans Transit," presented by Ride New Orleans. The panel included Eugene J. Green, Jr., Kelsey Foster, Kevin Ferguson, and Samuel Buckley, AICP. I haven't been dependent on public transportation since 1999, but I recognize that what effects some people in our community ultimately effects the entire community. A strong public transit system benefits the economy, and the climate, while improving equity. In time, it also reduces traffic! These are some of the reasons I'm in support of the work being done by Courtney Jackson, the rest of the team at RIDE New Orleans, and all of the community members who are working together rebuild our transit system. Over the next three years, St. Louis will receive a deluge of more than $300 million for sustainable transportation projects aimed at increasing multimodal access, calming traffic, and building out the city's protected bike lane network to a scale never seen before. Much of that money, though, is flowing from one-time federal grants and once-in-a-lifetime infusions of cash from the COVID-era American Rescue Plan Act – and some fear that the the current structure of the local government isn't set up to build on that momentum once the funds dry up. Valley Transportation Authority Policy Advisory Committee. The Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has released the Transit-Oriented Communities Grant to seek proposals from Santa Clara municipalities, jurisdictions, arts, cultural, education, nonprofit and other community organizations to support VTA’s vision of equitable Transit-Oriented Communities. #HiltonForCouncil #Gilroy #HiltonForGilroy #DowntownGilroy #GilroyBPAC #GilMtg https://lnkd.in/gv2676MJ The goal is to grow innovative and robust partnerships between VTA and local public agencies, nonprofit, community organizations, and other diverse stakeholders to strengthen communities, increase transit ridership, reduce the need for car trips, and support intensive mixed-use, mixed-income development around light rail stations and transit hubs. Selected projects will be collaborative across community and/or local government partners and remove barriers to creating safe, walkable, healthy, resilient, and thriving neighborhoods next to transit. VTA will fund $750,000 in total to eligible applicants. Selected projects are planned to commence between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025. There’s a Pre-Application Workshop on April 30th 1:30-2:30pm at the Gilroy Library I want to provide some stats for the VTA bus routes in Gilroy. These daily boarding increases are from January 2024, all have seen an increase in ridership year-over-year, and to these riders I say thank you for riding public transit. Across the United States, communities are grappling with the need for alternative routes to address infrastructure challenges, improve travel times, and enhance safety. In the Treasure Valley, we've unfortunately experienced a perfect storm of these issues. Our roads, designed for a smaller population, are struggling to accommodate the rapid growth of the past five years. While the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is making significant strides in improving our existing highway and interstate systems, the reality is that we need more options to meet our growing transportation needs. Pathways Forward Idaho is committed to working collaboratively with the public and elected officials to identify innovative solutions to these challenges. By fostering open dialogue and seeking input from all stakeholders, we can develop transportation strategies that better serve our community and ensure a safer, more efficient future for the Treasure Valley. #PathwaysForwardIdaho #TreasureValley #Transportation #Infrastructure #Safety #Community #Idaho #Growth #Development #Solutions

Did you know 75% of Main Streets are bisected by a state highway? Neither did I. Main Street communities are our gateways to outdoor recreation, and chances are your community is struggling to improve walking and biking safety or address the state highway that inevitably cuts through your downtown. This article form Main Street America is a great entry point to federal sources of funding that are available to leverage transportation improvements for downtown revitalization and start to build (what John Simmerman calls) an "Active Towns" culture of people-focused movements and activity. https://lnkd.in/e7AjrARC

The City of Stirling is at at a Nexus with its upcoming Council and Resources committee this Tuesday where they will consider whether to support the Hector St safe active street project. Should be an interesting discussion! There will be impacts for the City’s active transport strategies in the future one way or the other. Check out the interim report evaluating the current operation of 4 km of the Moorland St safe active street which runs from Odin Road to West Coast Highway Scarborough. I’m staggered as to how much misunderstanding there is in the general community from well educated stakeholders of how safe active streets generally operate in allowing slow each way moving traffic in a 30 Kph zone - I think it’s more to do with fear of change and what as a community we are willing to compromise and live with for the greater good in terms of road safety and the activation of other transport modes. As a community, changes like this don’t happen overnight as can be seen in many examples from around Australia and the rest of the world.

In my latest op-ed with NYC Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers, who is the chair of the City Council's Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, we call for expanded ferry service to/from Far Rockaway. You may have heard (or seen the signs at your local station) that the A-train will be suspended in Far Rockaway for 4 months, beginning on January 17. That is because the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is making necessary upgrades to the train tracks that will improve their ability to withstand climate-induced extreme weather events. This is a great moment to set an example for how our transit systems support each other. When one goes down, another sets sail. In the absence of reliable train service for Rockaway residents, the New York City Economic Development Corporation must utilize and expand service on the NYC Ferry. When asked, Mayor Eric Adams said he “believe in ferries” and thinks “ferries are a good way to move around.” Transit resilience is more than just being prepared for future floods. It means we have redundancies in other forms, like ferries, when trains or bridges are not operational. Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers and I make a strong case. Check it out for yourself here: https://lnkd.in/eQ3WwUTg
