Great to be in Sweden this week with Dr John Bamber and others, to present on our youth justice relationships project and also the Greentown programme for young people caught up in criminal networks. So good to hear an international audience positively affirming our work.
Our theme this month is the act of transformation – like when a seed transforms into a flower. A seed is nourished and nurtured with tender care – this means it will eventually transform into a flower. Survivors use their lived experiences to change the future – this means your story transforms into your strength. Systems are well overdue for an overhaul – this means voices need to be heard to transform arenas like the justice system into something actually beneficial for survivors and abusers alike. This month, we’ll explore the act of transformation: what’s needed for it, how we can support others through it, and everything in between!

One of the last known lynchings in Maryland happened in Salisbury in 1931, when Mathew Williams was attacked by a racist mob, hanged and his body was dragged to the Black community and set afire. Now the city has finally decided to apologize, and the city council is expected to ratify it on Monday. Many in the community think the apology falls short and doesn't address the intergenerational effects of what is described as an act of racial terror. In 2021 I was commissioned to produce a mini documentary and photo essay on the legacy lynching across the state by the International Center of Transitional Justice. I traveled from Cumberland to Salisbury and in between to interview descendents, activists and other stakeholders. You can see the 7 minute mini-doc at the link below https://lnkd.in/eYugndMK

Within any three-year timeframe, adult Canadians encounter over 35 million everyday legal issues, with over 20% taking no action to address them meaningfully due to barriers such as financial constraints, time constraints, delays, lack of information, and limited service availability. The United States, despite its vast linguistic diversity, has no official language at the federal level. This traces back to the nation’s founding, where early leaders, like the framers of the Constitution, avoided designating an official language to foster inclusion and reflect the nation’s openness to immigrants from all backgrounds. While English has always been the dominant language, various states have adopted English as their official language independently, and movements for an official federal language have surfaced over the years, often in response to waves of immigration. However, these efforts have consistently been met with debates over freedom, inclusion, and cultural identity. Given this history, do you think having an official language would unify the nation, or would it risk marginalizing non-English-speaking communities?
