It's Dementia Action Week, and at PainChek we're shining a spotlight on pain. Unfortunately, people living with dementia often can't communicate that they're in pain. This week, we want to raise awareness that this community don't need to suffer anymore. We're spreading the word by sharing useful tips on how to identify pain where it isn't obvious. Our team of educators are visiting Care Homes nationwide, embedding best practice pain management. We're also attending the Care Roadshows in the North West on Tuesday and the Midlands on Thursday to talk to Care Providers about how we can give a voice to people living with dementia who cannot communicate their pain. Join us at the roadshows to learn more and spread the word. The Power of Human Touch (Dementia Communication Tips) – There are certain innate features of the human body and our interactions with each other; one of the most powerful is that of physical touch. Preterm infants, when given infant massage improve faster. Large studies have shown that physical touch leads to less depression and increases in oxytocin and other biological chemicals that help the mind and body. When we dance, we touch each other gently. Hugging, kissing, even just holding hands can be a powerful form of connecting with one another. So do not take lightly one of the simplest non-verbal ways to communicate. The simple act of holding or squeezing the hand of a loved one living with dementia can go a long way. Especially in comparison to how many people are treated in hospital or clinical environments where human touch is all but vacant and discouraged. #touch #holdinghands #dementia #alzheimer #alzheimers #caregiving #care #caregiver #carepartner #communication #howyouaretomeapproach #caregivingtips #PLWD #HYATMA

When someone with dementia has something in their hands they shouldn’t have… focus on what they can replace it with rather than how to convince them to let go. Give them a sense of purpose by acting like they found something that you’ve been looking everywhere for! They’ve saved the day! Or think about a two handed task they can help with that would require them to set the object down. No, not everyone can carry a chair… but giving them a snack they need both hands for could be perfect. Unless they or others are in immediate danger, it’s not worth fighting it out of their hands.
