20 healthcare biotech startups attracted almost $3B in Q1 2024 funding, which was a 161% increase from the top 20 healthcare biotech funding announcements in Q1 2023. Alumis, a precision immunology company, raised $529M in total, including $259M in Series C, to develop targeted treatments for autoimmune diseases. Freenome, an early cancer detection biotech, secured $1.35B in total funding, including $254M in Series E. Sionna Therapeutics, focusing on cystic fibrosis treatments, raised $292M, with $182M in Series C. Capstan Therapeutics attracted $175M in Series B funding to advance precision in vivo cell engineering technologies for immunotherapies. BioAge Labs secured $294M, adding $170M in Series D, to research therapies for obesity and metabolic diseases. Stories making headlines today in the biopharma industry: Day One Biopharmaceuticals is making a significant move in oncology by acquiring MTX-13 from MabCare Therapeutics for $55 million upfront. MTX-13, an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC), will enter Phase 1 trials, with the potential deal value reaching $1.2 billion. This acquisition aligns Day One with companies like Genmab, Ipsen, and BioNTech, who are also bolstering their investments in ADC development. The FDA has placed a partial hold on three clinical trials for Zentalis’ WEE1 inhibitor, azenosertib, following two patient deaths from suspected sepsis in the Phase 2 DENALI study of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer patients. Although current participants can continue, new enrollments are halted, causing a 30% drop in Zentalis’ stock price. Taysha Gene Therapies has released early Phase 1/2 data showing promise for their Rett syndrome treatment, TSHA-102. Patients experienced sustained improvements in motor skills, communication, and socialization. One notable case involves a patient sitting unaided for the first time in over a decade and another with reduced seizure frequency and intensity. The newest Flagship-backed company Prologue Medicines will search through the vast viral proteome to identify proteins with therapeutic potential. Prologue will debut with $50 million in initial funds, which it will use to advance its proprietary DELVE platform, a proteome-assisted drug discovery technology that makes use of high-throughput methods to search through the viral proteome for potentially therapeutic molecules. Prologue’s novel approach to drug development takes advantage of the expansive viral proteome, which according to co-founder and CEO Lovisa Afzelius “dwarfs the human proteome by orders of magnitude.” DELVE enables the biotech to “reveal a trove of powerful new proteins that can be used as medicines across nearly any therapeutic area,” she said. LRRK2 potential target for Parkinson's therapy As is well known, the MJFF is focusing on research into therapeutic methods to improve the lives of patients with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Disease-modifying drugs are of course a particular focus here. Research is currently being conducted into a ground-breaking therapeutic target. This is a gene that is known to be one of the main risk factors in Parkinson's disease.  "Variants in the GBA1 and LRRK2 genes are the most common genetic risk factors associated with Parkinson disease (PD)."
