Clubs are driving esports. They bring the winning players together, form a team, and support their growth. They tell stories about competition. They build rivalries and friendships. They unite fans from all over the world together - and sometimes also two neighbors, living door to door, never knowing they had the same passion. At EWCF, we know the value that Clubs bring to the ecosystem - and as one of the first initiatives in 2023, we built a partnership with 30 top brands in esports leading up to the inaugural Esports World Cup, creating sustainability in the market and the ability to further invest into growth and competitiveness; complimenting the competitive and open-to-all Club Championship that rewards competitive excellence with a Club-exclusive prize pool - $20M in 2024, with $7M going directly to the winner. Many esports teams are going through an identity crisis, and it’s stopping them from developing new revenue streams and further scaling existing ones. Esports Insider recently published ‘Is winter thawing? Industry leaders discuss esports finances’ (https://lnkd.in/ehzMzSiC), in which they discuss with teams whether the "esports winter" is finally over or not. Whilst it may seem negative, in fact it’s about esport finding its own identity with less reliance on sports models and more reliance on the broader gaming ecosystem. In ESI’s article it’s clear that, whilst teams are making mostly positive noises, there are still deeper rooted issues that need solving for teams to turn their popularity into larger revenue streams. Has esports only weathered the storm, as it did before, or is it truly transforming into an ecosystem with its own identity? Traditional sports clubs like Manchester United, Barcelona, or the Dallas Cowboys have a single sport focus, strong regional ties, and real fan loyalty. Naturally, many esports teams have dreamt for (too) long being like them. And it makes sense to some extent, larger sponsorships may be easier to sell as "one brand, one mission", and easier to manage. However, esports teams are fundamentally different to sports clubs. Esports orgs manage multiple teams across different games. Fans connect more with individual players than the organization. So, while they’re trying to mimic traditional sports clubs models, they’re missing out on leveraging their unique strengths. I've been exploring the esports landscape since 2016. That Fall, we participated in a program in Las Vegas, which was aiming to be the esports capital of the world, and we explored bringing our SidePrize solution to video game contests. Ironically, coming out of the program, we were more inclined to solve the money in & money out problem of team-based tournaments (Eventbrite was the default, but insufficient solution). By 2017, I had refocused my energy on fantasy sports, and by 2019, the first professional league partnership at PrizePicks was with the SMITE Pro League. Post-pandemic, we leaned into esports in a more significant way as traditional sports (or what we call "tsports") around the world were turned off. One of my favorite expressions that originated in our community goes like "Can you explain this in [NBA] terms?" Most of the time, those questions are geared towards tsports fans who want to get into esports. Our Director of Esports Strategy Adam Boothe, SVP of Revenue Dylan Cooper & more recognized how the same resources to do your research for tsports were not nearly as prevalent for esports. As a result, we've been conceptualizing and building The Esports Lab for quite a while. For an initial product beta release, I'm super-impressed by how robust the v1 experience turned out. To integrate the streams, get all the data for multiple titles & much more was no easy feat. We're looking forward to leaving our mark in the esports ecosystem for a long time to come. Why venues are important for esports teams? 🏟 Not only does it give a stronger sense of community for teams' fanbases, which have a physical place they can always show up to, but it's also a strong opportunity for teams to generate and diversify revenue streams.
