Proud of the BCO Network event yesterday at the European Week of Regions and Cities. Ashya Lane-Spollen animated an interesting discussion on bridging the digital divide by supporting digital infrastructure for smart and sustainable regions, with great panelists, Pirita Lindholm, Director at ERRIN, Markku Markkula, VP CoR, Catherine Wendt, Head of Unit at DG REGIO and Marie Clotteau, from Grand Est region France. All speakers and participants from the audience insisted on the importance of digital connectivity for the competitiveness of European regions, especially for rural areas. It was evident from the discussion that infrastructure is not the only essential requirement: a lack of digital skills is still holding some regions back. The discussion also highlighted the importance of added value services, and the need for adaptive and replicable use cases to be developed to trigger the take up of connectivity and accelerate both rural development and regional growth. Join us next week, on 18 October, as we discuss specifically how 5G use cases can be replicated and scaled. We will explore lessons learned from the first wave of CEF-funded ‘smart community’ projects.

Ecorys Principal Consultant Jochen Maes will join the POLIS Network 2024 Annual Conference to discuss critical governance strategies for Europe’s Urban Nodes as they work towards EU Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) targets. The updated TEN-T regulation mandates that 431 Urban Nodes develop SUMPs at the Functional Urban Area (FUA) level soon. Jochen will share insights on bridging the gap between local and trans-European goals to drive connectivity, accessibility, and sustainability in urban mobility. >> Speaking in Session 2G on the 27th of November, 14h30 In his presentation, Jochen will draw from Ecorys’ work on EU-funded projects such as SCALE-UP (https://lnkd.in/gY5cNAr) and VITAL-NODES. He will highlight how multilayered governance models can help overcome the challenge of coordinating across different governing entities within urban nodes. We propose a general 4-step approach to discussing node-specific barriers and challenges. The Ecorys deliverables are prepared in close cooperation with David Matheus and Francesco Bellati. His session will address practical solutions to meet ambitious EU objectives for logistics and multimodal transport, guiding Urban Nodes as they prepare to tackle last-mile connectivity, multimodal hubs, and sustainable freight transport. #Ecorys #SCALE-UP #POLIS24 #UrbanMobility #Governance
