I am excited to announce that I have started my education to become a Nurse Practitioner this semester! I am extremely excited for what the future holds and cannot wait to engage in the next few years of my education. However, as NPs I believe one of our biggest obstacles as healthcare professionals is that of Full Practice Authority throughout the United States. In 1970 states began regulating NPs beyond their ARNP license. This arose with issues in regards to how adequately NPs can treat their patients due to rules and regulations. “In FPA states, NP licensure is not contingent on unnecessary contracts or relationships with a physician or oversight by the state medical board. As a result, studies show that in FPA states, NPs are more likely to practice in rural and underserved areas and have improved NP workforce recruitment, while meeting the highest care quality and safety standards. States that restrict or reduce NPs’ ability to practice by limiting licensure authority are more closely associated with geographic health care disparities, higher chronic disease burden, primary care shortages, higher costs of care and lower standing on national health rankings.” (AANP, 2024, para 3). I believe that everyone should have access to nurse practitioners' care within their community. As NPs can provide low cost and effective treatment to those who need it. Yesterday I took and Successfully passed the national certification exam to offically hold the title of, "Certified Clinical Nurse Leader." Every hospital as well as outpatient clinics can benefit from the skills and resources that a CNL brings to an organization. I can't wait to someday use all of my previous experiences and education to serve in this type of role. What do CNL's do you ask? Here is a description from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a specialized nursing role that focuses on improving patient care outcomes and coordinating care within interdisciplinary health care teams. Here are some key aspects of the CNL role: 1.Coordinating Patient Care: CNLs oversee care coordination for a specific group of patients. They work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless transitions and continuity of care. 2. Measuring Patient Outcomes: CNLs assess patient outcomes, evaluate the effectiveness of care plans, and identify areas for improvement. They use data and evidence-based practices to enhance patient care. 3. Risk Assessment: CNLs assess risks across groups of patients and develop or revise care plans accordingly. Their goal is to minimize risks and enhance patient safety 4. Research and Implementation: CNLs stay informed about the latest research and evidence in nursing practice. They implement new policies and practices within their clinical setting to improve patient care 5. Communication and Collaboration: CNLs serve as lateral integrators of care, bridging communication channels between different healthcare teams. They actively collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other professionals to optimize patient outcomes. 6. Quality Standards: CNLs ensure that quality standards are met in patient care. They actively participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the overall excellence of nursing practice. Overall, the CNL role combines clinical competence, leadership, and a commitment to improving patient care outcomes. Leading with Evidence, Caring with Heart As an Evidence-Based Nurse Manager, my approach to leadership is grounded in the integration of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best available research evidence. I am committed to making decisions that are not only informed by the latest scientific findings but also tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients and team. By fostering a culture of evidence-based practice, we ensure that our nursing interventions are effective, our outcomes are measurable, and our care is consistently aligned with the highest standards of quality. This approach empowers our nurses to stay at the forefront of healthcare innovations, continuously improving the way we deliver care. I believe that evidence-based management isn’t just about policies and procedures; it’s about creating an environment where critical thinking and continuous learning thrive. It’s about mentoring our nurses to question, to seek out the best evidence, and to apply it in ways that truly benefit our patients and their families. Every day, we face complex challenges in healthcare, but by relying on evidence, we make informed decisions that lead to better patient outcomes and a stronger, more resilient team. #EvidenceBasedPractice #NurseLeadership #QualityCare #ContinuousImprovement
