"Your time in academia is primarily about your training as a scholar, not just about the research you produce. As such, my advice would be that the direction you take your research ought not to be motivated only by the scientific results, but also by what you want to learn and grow into. What role would you like to have after you finish your program? What skills do you enjoy using? What kinds of challenges do you want to contribute to solving? There are many such questions to ask about what work you want to do, just as there are numerous decision points in any research project: What system are we studying? What questions are we asking about this system? How do we go about answering them? These questions about personal goals and scientific direction ought to be considered together. There are often constraints on these decisions, many outside our direct control. Another academic year done and dusted🥳🫶🏽!! By far the most hectic year so far🤣, and I’m hearing it gets worse than this. But I thank God that I’ve been able to conquer once again ☺️. ✨Some highlights from this academic year; 1. I served as the Chemical Engineering School Officer: My first time ever serving in a leadership position of this capacity. I gave my all to this role, some days I was literally asking myself who sent me work🤣, but that’s what comes with leadership and I’m grateful for the journey. 2. I served (still serving) as the Director of Research of the upcoming WattMUN, which is my university’s Model UN conference. You’ll hear more about this soon☺️. This will also be my first time participating in an MUN conference. 3. I ran for my first ever election (Executive of Academics). I didn’t win but I do t regret running at all! I enjoyed the experience and learned a whole lott. A lot more but I’ll save the full gist for my newsletter, so you should subscribe😘. CNA/CNS Student Awards 2024 MSc Winner: Hailey (Xinran) Pan My name is Hailey; I am in my second year of a Master of Science program in Physical/Analytical Chemistry at Western University under the supervision of Dr. Jamie Noel. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, and for my Master's program, I am focusing on the study of Electrochemistry and Material Corrosion. My research is about the study of the proposed used fuel containers' integrity in deep geological repositories. Specifically, I'm investigating the corrosion of containers' cold spray copper coatings in environments containing oxides and bisulfides. I use electrochemical methods to evaluate corrosion behaviour and surface analysis techniques to characterize surface conditions and corrosion products. My research will help us obtain a better understanding of used fuel containers’ long-term performance in a deep geological repository. Congratulations Hailey! #cns #cna #studentawards

🗣 In a recent interview regarding the "75th Years UNSW Chemical Engineering - Celebration & Reunion", Professor Guangzhao Mao, Head of the UNSW Chemical Engineering, reflected on her experiences and the changes she has witnessed over the years.

Here's my first update on my experiences in the PhD program in chemical engineering at UF so far.

🌟Course Completion Update! 🚀I am thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Research Methods (CHE802) course at Michigan State University as part of my PhD journey in Chemical Engineering and Material Science. 📚This course equipped me with essential skills required for graduate research, including: - Critically reviewing the literature to identify gaps and opportunities. - Defining a fundamental research problem with clarity and precision. - Mastering the art of effective oral and written technical presentations. - Exploring the ethical considerations inherent in scientific inquiry. - Understanding the principles of statistics and their application in research. ✨ One of the most engaging activities during the course was writing a book report on "Ignorance: How It Drives Science" by Stuart Firestein. This thought-provoking book underscores the importance of asking good questions over having answers. It emphasizes embracing the unknown, fostering curiosity, and recognizing the value of inquiry in scientific exploration. 🕵♂️ Throughout the course, I had the privilege of engaging with diverse perspectives and methodologies, enriching my understanding of the research process.
