The Ministry of Defense in Tokyo has announced the largest-ever organizational restructuring in the history of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The new reorganization process will abolish the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Fleet Escort Force (護衛艦隊 in Japanese) and the Mine Warfare Force (掃海隊群). A new “Fleet Surface Force” (水上艦隊), as tentatively named by the Japanese MoD, will be created instead. Under the reorganization plan, the new Fleet Surface Force will consist in: * Three Surface Battle Groups (水上戦群), * One Amphibious Mine Warfare Group (水陸両用戦機雷戦群) * One Patrol Defense Group (哨戒防備群) The 1st to 3rd Surface Battle Groups will become the main units. By changing the current four Escort Flotillas into three Surface Battle Groups, the number of ships in each Surface Battle Group will increase. This will allow for efficient rotation of missions, training, maintenance, and so on within each Surface Battle Group. Furthermore, in the event of an emergency, all three Surface Battle Groups will be able to operate at the same time, the MoD said. #japan #jmsdf #naval #warships #defense

'We’ve actually built out a capability with Marines that go aboard either ships or on the craft — not just [a liaison officer] with a radio but something different where they’ll actually talk to one another, which is unique. 'This year’s Cobra Gold was also the first to have a Common Operating Picture, which Stone described as “a fused, common, shared picture of the battlespace” for all forces involved. 'Setting up the COP took years of work on information-sharing agreements and technological compatibility, which was needed so they could “fuse information” to “understand what’s occurring in the air, what’s occurring on the surface, and perhaps the undersea as well so you can use that information together,” Stone said. 'As part of that effort, it [USMC] has shed “big, heavy things” like tanks and tube artillery and is developing new units, hardware, and training. 'One Amphibious Ready Group-Marine Expeditionary Unit formation ... [is] only about 2,000 Marines. If we were planning an amphibious assault against an adversary we’d want a force several times that size. Could we call that up? I’m not sure". 'A major concern is the US Navy’s 31-ship amphibious fleet, which faces availability issues and is set to shrink. Royal Navy Seeks Long-Range Anti-Submarine Weapon The Royal Navy is looking for a new missile system that can launch torpedoes from its Type 26 frigates. This Long Range Anti-Submarine Warfare weapon (LRAW) aims to counter the increasing range of modern submarine-launched torpedoes, exceeding 50km. While the U.S. Navy's Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rocket (VLA) is compatible with the Type 26's Mk41 launch system, its current range of approximately 10km falls short. Make no mistake, being ready for the next war is very much deterring the next war… What Admiral Melson does and achieves in the next year or two will be extremely important. It will likely decide initial disposition and outcomes of the battles in the beginning of that war should it come this decade. With Red Hill fuel depot closed and no replacement or alternative fueling plan in place, the military in the Pacific has lots of ground to make up and quickly. Three platforms called out in this regard are: EPFs, LCS and CMV-22… missing are tankers, repair ships (i.e. sub tenders). In recent years, Melson’s command (COMLOGWESTPAC) has also been tasked with supporting, engaging and executing naval operations and exercises in the South China Sea. Given the importance and consequence of the logistics challenge it is time to create a new numbered fleet dedicated to contesting the Chinese maritime insurgence there. https://lnkd.in/edHVpz3h

The United States Marine Corps' Force Design overhaul, aimed at countering peer threats like China, is yielding operational benefits. During Exercise Nordic Response, Marines used the G/ATOR radar to track airborne threats near Russia. This sensing capability is a key part of Force Design's shift toward intelligence gathering. LtGen Karsten Heckl cited the G/ATOR's role as an example of how Force Design provides unique capabilities to allies. LtGen James Bierman highlighted Marine operations in the Red Sea, countering Houthi rebel threats to maritime traffic, as evidence of Force Design's impact. He also mentioned Exercise Azure Dragon, which validated the Marine Expeditionary Force's ability to "stand in" as an integrated air-ground task force with 25,000 personnel. PRO FORCE DESIGN POINT - Explain why nearly 10,000 tanks have been destroyed in Ukraine by non-armor assets and why Kiev has pulled back our donated M1 tanks. COUNTERPOINT - Tanks have been severely tested in the war in Ukraine and often poorly employed. However, no modern military, other than the US Marine Corps, has abandoned them. Just the opposite; the US Army is developing a new tank with a requirement to be able to defend against the weapons seen in recent wars. The British Army is designing a new Leopard 3, and the Germans and French have formed a consortium to design and build a new modern tank with similar requirements. It is still true that tanks need infantry and infantry needs tanks.

Great story about the Osprey from a former colleague of mine. Assault support, particularly the logistics mission, is essential to any expeditionary mission. #Tiltrotors give the range and speed needed for many of those missions. For others, smaller, more attritable platforms may be more desirable. In either case "bullets don't fly without supply." DYK: MCSC is developing and fielding new, cutting-edge power and water capabilities to modernize the service and align with Force Design’s vision of the future force. According to Maj. Adam Deitrich, Expeditionary Fuel and Water Systems Team Lead, PdM Engineer Systems, PM CSS, “The Platoon Water Purification System (PWPS) is a remarkable capability that fits into two Pelican cases. It promotes small unit autonomy by providing water for 45 Marines for a minimum of 30 days. The PWPS is just one item in the Expeditionary Fuel and Water portfolio directly enabling Force Design and EABO operations. Others being fielded soon include the Tactical Aviation Ground Refueling System, the Expeditionary Mobile Fuel Additive Capability, and the Lightweight Water Purification System 3.0.
