The program, under the tutelage of Professor Peter Zemsky, was an amazing learning experience that emphasized the significance of creating the right strategy with the right digital technologies disrupting our industries. Our world is bold on digital. It is a bit like bread: Everyone needs it, everyone eats it. But baking bread based upon an existing recipe is less challenging than baking a digital strategy into an organization without a proven blueprint - let alone effectively operationalizing it. That´s why I am back in learning mode: The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) Lausanne´s virtual „Digital Transformation in Practice“ program got my attention. As IMD is considered Europe´s #1 business school, this is set to be a great opportunity. Today was Day 1 with Professors Didier Bonnet and Michael Wade and Executive Coach Konstadinos Kutsikos providing answers to questions like: „Do you feel lost when leading a complex, digital transformation?“ „Do you struggle to translate your transformation strategy into action?“ „Do you feel uncomfortable when dealing with external consultants?“ A troubling 87% of all digital transformations fail! But 13% succeed! During the program, we are diving into best practices on defining and sustaining value in digital transformations. IMD´s research will be a foundation to gain know-how on: 🏗 Setting-up a successful digital transformation. 💰 Understanding how to maximize the ROI. 🤼 Addressing the people and culture challenges. 🚀 Responding more effectively to disruptions. 🖥 Transitioning an organization into a digital business environment. These are challenges for every law and compliance team around the world, regardless of whether in-house or law firm. One of today´s take-aways for me was this: Rather than focussing on tech and data (it would be merely an IT project then), first create a robust organizational mindset embracing the positive value of a digital transformation. The team should gain the intrinsic conviction that a transformation is a joint growth mechanism with a positive outcome for everyone. On that basis, leveraging digital technologies is a welcomed and logical second step rather than rapidly being forced upon the organization and people feeling compelled to change their habits to use digital tools. 📢 What Makes an Excellent Review Article? New Evidence from Management and Organization Research A brand-new (2025) study published in Academy of Management Annals by Gorgi Krlev at ESCP Business School, Tim Hannigan of University of Ottawa, and Andre Spicer of Bayes Business School analyzes 1,441 review articles to answer this crucial question for authors and editors. We thought we should share about the article (it is a good read) on our page as it may prove to be very helpful for authors considering to publish their work in the World Scientific Annual Review of Fintech. Main insights for prospective contributors: 1. High-quality reviews should demonstrate clear purpose and direction relative to their field's current knowledge infrastructure. Rather than simply spotting gaps, reviews should actively shape knowledge development. 1a. The study identifies four distinct directions reviews can take: - Reshaping (changing existing course or opening new paths) - Renovating (calling into question and renewing within subject area) - Expanding (pushing beyond narrow boundaries) - Ordering (organizing subject areas systematically) 2. Authors should carefully consider their field's current state when choosing their review's direction. A mature field might benefit from reshaping, while an emerging field may need ordering. 3. The most impactful reviews balance substantive content with reflexive engagement - they don't just describe what we know, but actively construct how we should understand it. 💡 We encourage submissions that demonstrate clear purpose and direction, making deliberate choices about how to advance knowledge in the #fintech field. 💡 We look for review articles that go beyond summarizing literature to actively shape scholarly conversations and knowledge infrastructure. I am delighted to share that I have completed the Harvard Business School online program "Disruptive Strategy". 👨🏼🎓 It is easy to talk about strategy in the business realm. However, successful strategy generation, planning and execution is much more complex than it seems. This very well-structured program describes the entire methodology for: Aligning with Innovation and Disruption, Discovering Customer Jobs to be Done (JTBD), Organizing for Innovation, Maintaining a Disruptive Scope, and Managing the Strategy Development Process. At the end, strategy is a living process that requires continuous vigilance, not only for the plan execution, but also for detecting (on-time) when the strategy requires improvement and why not... start all over for the sake of the organization.
