Unfortunately social media has lead to a lot of negativity in respect of life in the United Kingdom. But there are many many historic institutions and charities whose work has created unique experiences for everybody. Here we need to acknowledge the truly amazing National Trust.
The National Trust is a conservation organization based in the United Kingdom that works to preserve and protect historic places, natural landscapes, and cultural heritage sites. It was established in 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter, and Hardwicke Rawnsley in response to concerns about the industrialization and urbanization of the country, which threatened many of its natural and historical sites.
Mission and Purpose
The primary mission of the National Trust is to preserve and protect the UK’s heritage and open spaces for the enjoyment of future generations. This includes a wide variety of properties such as historic houses, gardens, ancient monuments, coastline, countryside, and even entire villages.
Key Facts
• Membership: The National Trust is one of the largest membership organizations in the UK, with millions of members who contribute to its conservation efforts through annual subscriptions.
• Properties Managed: The organization manages over 500 historic houses, castles, parks, and gardens, as well as nearly 800 miles of coastline and vast swathes of the British countryside.
• Funding: The National Trust is a charity that receives funding from membership fees, donations, legacies, and revenue from its properties, such as admission fees, retail sales, and rentals.
• Volunteers: The Trust relies heavily on volunteers to help manage and maintain its properties.
Conservation Work
The National Trust is involved in a wide range of conservation activities, including:
• Restoration: Restoring historic buildings and gardens to their former glory.
• Protection: Safeguarding natural habitats and wildlife, often through land management practices like sustainable farming and rewilding projects.
• Education: Educating the public about the importance of heritage and conservation through events and exhibitions.
Global Influence
National Trust has inspired similar organizations worldwide, leading to the creation of National Trusts in other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, which focus on the preservation of local heritage.
Modern Relevance
National Trust is involved in contemporary issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the preservation of local traditions and crafts. By fostering a connection between people and places, the National Trust helps to ensure that the UK’s heritage is not only protected but also cherished by future generations.
I have to say although being a digital nomad you cannot beat owning a copy of their printed paper Handbook which is an amazing read. Banno

4moWhat a great partnership between Tarlton and the St. Louis Zoo. Just happened to be at the zoo yesterday with four of our grandchildren and saw the early progress on demolition and site preparation. It was refreshing to see the Tarlton team waving to the kiddos on the railroad train as they passed by their work area. 👍
