Today, we are celebrating the wealth of wisdom and experiences seniors bring to family and community life. They pass down key skills and traditions, shaping our collective heritage. Preserving their wisdom is essential and can be done via the following: - family workshops, - storytelling evenings, and - collaborative projects. These activities not only maintain cultural heritage but also strengthen family bonds. Despite challenges in bridging generational gaps, fostering open dialogue and respect is essential. The Nguzo Saba, is a Swahili word for “seven principles.” The third principle, Ujima, means collective work and responsibility- To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers and sisters’ problems our problems and to solve them together. This is just one of the practices of my ancestors that has continued to shape my work in community my entire organizing career.
