Why Remove Single-use Water Bottles? Conservative estimates suggest that more than 100 billion bottles end up in landfills around the world every year. In the US alone, more than 17 million barrels of oil are used to make one year’s supply of bottled water. Plastic water bottles, and plastic waste in general, have a devastating impact on our marine life, killing more than 1.1 million animals annually. The hotel industry is a large contributor to the global problem of single-use waste. Many hotels guests are aware of this and are increasingly expecting hotels to invest in processes and products that demonstrate a tangible desire to reduce single-use waste. Thankfully, hotel chains around the world are making changes to their supply chain to reduce their impact. High-quality water, dispensed from mains-connected water dispensers, are now at the forefront of a more sustainable approach to servicing water in hotels. The Harbour Hotel is constantly making a conscious effort to increase its sustainability practices within our hotel. Below are just some of the initiatives the Harbour Hotel team have taken along our sustainable journey. ♻️ In 2020 we removed all single use toiletries from our bedrooms. ♻️ In 2021 we replaced plastic water bottles from our rooms and replaced with compostable paper bottles. ♻️ In 2024 we are targeting a 20% reduction of Gas consumption & 10% reduction in electricity on 2023. ♻️ We use Eco Towels in the hotel which helps reduce drying time water temperature each wash resulting in Gas reduction by 10% and Electricity by 24% year to date . ♻️ We track and report on our waste break down on a monthly basis (with Waste Management Solutions company) and compete on it with other hotels in the MHL Hotel group. ♻️We have reached our goal of achieving over 80% of our waste being diverted from the landfill, we are currently achieving 82%. We have also installed induction in the main kitchen reducing our Gas consumption by 39%. ♻️ We are partners with Re Pack, who recycle all our cardboard. ♻️ We use Biodegradable coasters and drinking straws, compostable napkins and take-away cups. ♻️ We work towards reducing paper waste: remove unnecessary paper items from the rooms, minimise printed material and we have QR codes on our tables to reduce the amount of menu paper needed. I don’t understand the excessive use of plastic bottles in hotels, particularly in five-star hotels, its quite wasteful. During conducting the sessions, plastic bottles are often placed in large numbers, while in guest rooms, housekeeping typically places plastic bottles in each room daily. Imagine the sheer amount of plastic waste generated by this practice. Instead, it would be more sustainable alternative to place a large glass bottle in each room and refill it daily. Similarly, in conference rooms, water dispensers could be installed, and attendees could be encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles to refill as needed. Appreciated practice!👍I once stayed at a hotel where elegant glass water containers were provided in conference rooms and restaurants. They were not only sophisticated and hygienic but also added a touch of class.
