Grateful to have been chosen for #AMPTGrant! While we are excited about this opportunity we also wanted to express our remarks regarding the election: The personal is political. The choices we make in our everyday lives, the way we engage with others, and the values we teach our children all shape the world around us. As we reflect on the outcome of the recent election, let’s lean into the importance of community connections, remembering that our mental health and the act of protecting our energy are vital during times of division and uncertainty. The election results have left many of us feeling divided, both as a nation and within ourselves. Yet, even in the face of this fragmentation, we must remember our shared commitment to one another, especially to our Black and Latine communities. We need to be able to empathize with others, to understand perspectives that may differ from our own. While we may not agree with every viewpoint, it is crucial that we approach each other with kindness, compassion, and an open heart. We must teach our children to be supportive, to listen, and to engage with respect—no matter how challenging the conversation may be. Together, we have the power to transform division into unity, uncertainty into clarity, and frustration into action. Stand with us, stand with each other, and let’s build a future rooted in our peace, hope, and love. Just finished watching Uncharitable featuring Dan Pallotta and a bunch of other nonprofit leaders you may have heard of. In short, everyone in our industry--everyone who wants to solve the world's problems--should see this. I'm still formulating the thoughts around my feelings about it. There is something deep here about economic justice and the pervasive persistence of the haves keeping what they have. There is something here about separateness and the lack of true understanding -- like deep soul understanding -- that we are all one. We are all connected. What you do to the least of my brothers you do to me kind of deep knowing. Something here about the deep fear of losing what you have--not just possessions but also identity. Who am I when I am no longer poor or homeless or mentally ill or hungry or uneducated? Something here about the kuleana that appears when you see the truth and now have a responsibility to do something about it. We're overworked enough already! Don't give me more to do! Still formulating, marinating on these thoughts. Maybe they will never coalesce into anything, but they will be running in the background. In the meantime, there is still much to do, as I am working to help nonprofit leaders become million-dollar fundraisers and create the impact they want to have on the world. These heroic leaders deserve our best support because they are working to solve the problems that you don't have the skills, talent, or time to do yourself. If you're feeling bold, share it with your donors, too. Especially if they get it and are passionate about your organization. The most valuable piece of advice I can give you about showing up in your community is to get comfortable going alone. Showing up by yourself, especially when you know nothing about the event or the people there, demonstrates courage and leadership. Don’t look for familiar faces. Instead, aim to meet new people. Most importantly, carry your message with you. While you attend as an individual, you represent a nonprofit or charity. Be prepared to talk about your organization, much like someone in sales talks about their work. Avoid personal topics like your grandchildren or last vacation. You are there to promote your mission, and you need to communicate that effectively. This is what true nonprofit leadership in your community looks like.
