This terrific piece by Libby Stanford at Education Week on the state of teacher vacancies caught my eye, as it speaks to so much of what we're working through with educator preparation program partners and local school systems. While the proportion of schools experiencing vacancies ticked down slightly from last year, about 3 in 4 schools still reported difficulty filling positions. Certain specialties and subject areas are, again, more difficult to fill. School systems report challenges finding qualified candidates, even when they are able to fill open positions. All of this is why we at Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity have been working in partnership with educator prep and #K12 districts like in Tarrytown NY with Mercy University through our ecosystem approach to addressing pipeline challenges. https://lnkd.in/efeyrYHZ You can read more about our Teacher Vacancy Tool in earlier Education Week by Madeline Will and how it's helping schools and educator prep programs support one another and advance #teaching and #learning. https://lnkd.in/eQM86weW https://lnkd.in/eJYjCeaf

States continue to grapple with persistent teacher shortages. Many schools attempt to fill positions through short-term solutions, which can undermine student learning since teachers’ effectiveness and their likelihood of staying in teaching are strongly influenced by the quality of preparation they receive. Teacher residencies feature candidates working in classrooms alongside an expert mentor teacher interwoven with credential coursework; candidates receive financial supports in exchange for a commitment to teach within the partnering local education agency. Residencies are a proven strategy for improving the quality of preparation while also providing a long-term solution to teacher shortages. This is so needed. 👏🏼 Anyone in schools on a day-to-day basis know this is a problem, and they are feeling it daily. Understaffed or schools with staff who are not strong educators results in serious trickle down effects on those inside the buildings doing the work. This has been been a simmering concern, from my own experience, for about 7-8 years and the pandemic expedited or uncovered the hidden underbelly of a lot of America’s systems and structures and—now jump to 2024—staffing our public schools is a serious concern. Sure, there’s still educators out there—technically. But if we want a health democracy in America we need a healthy schools that are staffed with the best of the best, not just a body to supervise. And no that not a dig on ALL teachers—just like any profession—there’s a wide range of talent and performance by folks, but the talent pool for those who want to work in America’s public schools is getting thinner and thinner. And we will face the consequences of that reality if not for action like this mentioned in this article below.

Interesting insights from recent studies are illuminating the teacher pipeline landscape, uncovering nuances in teacher shortages and turnover rates. While there's a modest uptick in enrollment and completion of teacher-preparation programs, turnover remains a concern, especially in schools supporting low-income communities. Despite a rise in job opportunities, the supply of teachers isn't meeting demand. It's crucial to prioritize strategies that enhance retention and improve working conditions alongside recruitment efforts to effectively address the persistent challenges. #TeacherPipeline #RetentionMatters

Addressing teacher shortages has been an ongoing issue for decades. A few key takeaways from this article (and my own two cents' worth): 🚨 The public teaching sector is far behind the for-profit sector when it comes to differentiating roles and tailoring employment incentives for different types of teachers. *(Several of my clients are addressing this issue by offering bonuses for hard-to-staff roles like STEM and Special Education teachers). 💡 I'd love to see more innovative programs like Illinois State University's TPTEL that seek to develop the bilingual teacher pipeline by providing full scholarships to bilingual paraeducators. *(This is the program which provided my pathway to a 14-year career as a dual language teacher! Sadly, it is no longer being funded). ❓ Solving persistent teacher shortages will require bold action on multiple fronts. What other creative approaches have you seen to attract and retain top teaching talent? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! #TeacherShortage #EducationReform #BilingualEducation #HigherEd #TeacherDevelopment #ScholarshipOpportunities #EducationEquity #GRNAlgonquin #Hiring
