Yesterday, I came across a group of people that were gathered around a car. The car seems to have broken down. While they were waiting for a towing vehicle, a man suggested something. He suggested they combine their efforts and push the car. (The car needed to move out of that spot for other cars to pass) They all agreed and started pushing it. The driver was still inside, controlling the steering. After a while, (after some back and forth), They were finally able to push the car out of the way without the help of a towing vehicle. Did you learn anything from this story? I did. TEAMWORK! 📌 Your performance will always depend on your ability to work successfully with other people. 📌 A team is the only way to get something difficult done. 💫 Nobody is perfect but a team can be perfect! Paramanantham Harrison Great post! As an engineering manager, it's crucial to balance these four qualities—passion, consistency, discipline, and motivation—across your team. Passion fuels enthusiasm and dedication, consistency ensures steady performance, discipline maintains focus and adherence to standards, and motivation drives the team to excel. Each team member brings a unique combination of these traits, so it’s your responsibility to identify their strengths and areas for growth, finding the right balance to optimize performance. All four qualities are interconnected and essential for effective team outcomes. In my experience, passion and motivation can fluctuate over time due to factors like workload, project changes, personal development, and team morale. However, discipline and commitment tend to be more stable, rooted in work ethic and responsibility. By keeping discipline and commitment strong, you can help balance the natural ups and downs of passion and motivation. Maintaining this balance is key to long-term team success.
Let’s be honest… Passion is great, but it’s not everything. What truly matters is contributing to the vision and delivering results. Here’s what I care about in my team: ✅ Professionalism ✅ Quality work ✅ Understanding who we’re building for But most importantly, I want my team to feel safe, respected, and valued for their contributions. If someone’s passionate about being paid and nothing more, that’s fine with me. As long as they consistently deliver, understand the mission, and work with integrity—that’s what truly counts. Passion is a bonus. Excellence is the standard.

When we asked David Karp to sit down with us, we thought we were going to talk about how to build a great post-sales motion... But I had no expectation that we would be getting a masterclass in everything from empathy, to communication, to culture & team building...and of course, there was some absolute gold about post-sales workflows and retention. Check this one out. Phenomenal conversation.
