The Fight for Justice Demands Unity, Action, and Resilience! At NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work), our vision of a just, loving, and thriving nonprofit sector is facing unprecedented challenges. The incoming administration has made its intent clear: dismantle decades of progress in social, racial, and environmental justice. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and the future of our communities—and generations to come—is on the line. But we are not here to sit idly by. In response, we’re convening Southeast Michigan’s most passionate leaders to build power through unity and shared purpose. History reminds us that collective action is the strongest tool we have. Just as past generations have triumphed over seemingly insurmountable odds, we, too, are stronger when we stand together. At the heart of this event are four core pillars—Learn, Practice, Play, and Rest—designed to cultivate community that is both grounded and energized for the road ahead. This event isn’t just about equipping our community with tools for sustainable activism; it’s about transforming connections into an unshakable network of trust, support, and resilience. The fight continues. We know that we're #strongertogether #Justice #NonprofitLeadership #SocialImpact #Equity #Solidarity
Join us on January 20, 2025 (01/20/25), for Stay Woke —a day of grounding, inspiration, and community care for Southeast Michigan’s changemakers. Though some have attempted to weaponize the term “woke” in recent years, we’re here to reclaim it, standing firm in our commitment to the pursuit of racial and social justice. Through learning, practice, play, and rest, we'll come together to strengthen our bonds, share insights, and find joy in a community that shares our vision and values. Expect engaging discussions, interactive workshops, delicious food, and restorative moments designed to renew our spirits. This is a chance to get rooted in community, be inspired, and leave ready for the road ahead. Let’s come together for a day of solidarity and renewal! Get your ticket today! https://lnkd.in/eyAv5qFp

Is Evanston’s Future Being Decided Without You? In this seven-minute clip from the January 8, 2025, Land Use Commission meeting, Commissioner Halik raises pivotal questions about Envision Evanston 2045, the Comprehensive Plan, and the proposed rezoning of the entire city. Halik directly questions city staff Elizabeth Williams whether residents' voices have truly been heard—or if city staff are being guided more by consultants than by the community’s concerns. As you watch, consider these questions: Are these meetings and plans aligned with the vision of Evanston’s residents, or are outside influences steering the conversation? Do you feel you’ve been given a meaningful voice in shaping Evanston’s future? Are these plans creating a city that prioritizes affordability and inclusivity—or one that caters to development at the expense of long-term residents? Commissioner Halik’s questions might spark your own concerns—or you may believe the city is on the right path. Either way, this is the time to engage, process the facts, and come to your own conclusion. 🗣️ Your voice matters now more than ever! Contact your Alderperson before Monday, January 13th, or show up at the City Council meeting to share your thoughts during public comment (in person or via Zoom). Whether you support rezoning for more housing, question the transparency of developer deals, or feel unheard in this process—speak up. 📅 And don’t forget to save the date for the Candidate Forum on Sunday, February 9th, from 4-7 PM. This forum is your chance to ask critical questions and hold leaders accountable as they shape Evanston’s future. Watch the clip. Process what’s happening. Decide for yourself what role you’ll play in Evanston’s story. #EnvisionEvanston2045 #rezoningevanston #EvanstonVoicesMatter #CommunityOverConsultants #AffordableHousingNow #TransparencyInGovernment #SpeakUpEvanston #YourCityYourFuture #CandidateForum2025 #CommissionerHalik #ElizabethWilliams #LandUsePlannerMeaganJones #MeaganJones #envisionevanston #evanston #AffordableHousing

We are back, baby! And we're stoked to invite you all to the FOURTH season of Racial Justice Weavings. These weekly gatherings are for outdoor education and recreation professionals from any school, company, or organization, in any role. First-timers and old-timers all welcome and encouraged! If you are seeking support for: processing your summer or fall season with a racial justice lens, racial justice work you're doing in your own family or workplace, or your personal liberation practice, join us. We're here to do it in community. Logistics: - Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6-8pm MST - September 4 - December 11, 2024 (with a few breaks in there) - Sliding scale pricing and we will not let cost be a barrier to anyone participating. In September 2020, we (Steph and Ella) began hosting a weekly space for our fellow backpacking and climbing instructors to talk about white supremacy, racism, and racial justice in outdoor education. The Racial Justice Weavings - "Weavings" - were named to place this gathering within its context: a long history and future of racial justice advocacy in outdoor spaces and education. The goal was to foster antiracist culture in our outdoor leadership school through collective learning and relationship-building. This relational, culture-shifting work is slow but it is powerful. We have learned and grown a lot together in the last four years, and we’re eager to keep building and deepening with the next cohort. Message info@greenwoodandduff.com to sign up.

August is National Civic Health Month. The National Civic League has created a civic health index that includes seven components of community-based civic capital: engaged residents, inclusive community leadership, collaborative institutions, embracing diversity and equity, authentic communication, a culture of engagement, and shared vision and values. Here in Arkansas, it is in our best interests, and in the best interests of our children and grandchildren, that we elect leaders who make it their mission to create and sustain civic health infrastructure that empowers the citizens of Arkansas to build livable communities where we all can thrive together. Read the 2023 Arkansas Civic Health Index, that I co-authored, to find out what our elected officials should be thinking about to improve our state's civic health: https://lnkd.in/gqaPARWU

If you live in Redwood City, East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks, or eastern Menlo Park, I am on your March 5th Democratic Party Presidential Primary Election Ballot. I am running for the San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee. See karenmaki.com. What is Central Committee? The county central committee make endorsements in local county, city council, and school board races and can influence the outcome of races. The County Central Committee endorsed in the District 1 and 4 County supervisorial races. A county central committees also take positions on county policy and state legislation by passing resolutions. For example, a county carty has opposed trying youth as adults and supported sheriff oversight. A county central committee can impact on local races and policies, which is why so many people are running. County Democratic Central Committee seats are hotly contested this year. There are twice as many candidates running as there are seats in all five districts. Many Democrats are competing for the opportunity to lead the County Party, including a former state senator, former mayors, city council members, and a county supervisor. Politicians who had previously delegated the grassroots efforts of managing the local party to activists are now seeking positions on the Central Committee. Candidates and their supporters are spending more money and utilizing more ways of influencing the public's vote than probably ever before. Candidates have websites and Facebook pages, host rallies, make phone calls, walk precincts, yard signs, and send mailers.

We should all learn more about RankedVote and rank choice voting in general!
750+ people cast ranked choice ballots to name Charlottesville's holiday tree last week. These little contests are huge for reaching residents who *aren't* obsessed with politics -- and that's what voter ed is all about. Thanks to RankedVote for making it possible and City of Charlottesville for embracing the fun. 🎄✨

June 19 commemorates Juneteenth, the day in 1865 on which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received the promise offered by the Emancipation Proclamation, more than two years after its issuance. President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — “sincerely believed to be an act of justice” — offered not just freedom but hope for equality. Nearly 160 years later, we continue to work toward the promise of this monumental document, with much left to do. At Greater St. Louis, Inc., we know that success for each of us is success for all of us. Achieving our North Star — inclusive economic growth — means that we must take into account the often painful history of both our region and our country and attempt to bridge the opportunity gaps left behind. Only by working together can we create opportunity, access, and equity for all. Explore Juneteenth events across the metro: https://lnkd.in/gpxAR354
