🎄 What do Christmas and Master Data have in common? At first glance, absolutely nothing—but that's not entirely true. Here's how data can make a real difference in spreading holiday cheer. For years, my wife has been a dedicated volunteer with Christmas Help North Zealand (https://lnkd.in/dR_er3ZX), an organization providing Christmas support to families struggling to meet the expectations of the season—especially the joy of children receiving presents. Every year, the pressure mounts as society pours billions into holiday spending, while an increasing number of families feel left behind. Over time, the number of families seeking assistance towards this organization has more than doubled, creating significant challenges in managing the critical information needed to help the families. Think about it: coordinating family data, children's wishes, sizes for clothing and shoes, Christmas calendars, food baskets, and even organizing donors and drivers to distribute the collected items—all while relying on Excel sheets and notebooks. This manual process, while heartfelt, was an enormous task for a small group of passionate volunteers. Witnessing this firsthand, I knew it didn’t have to be this hard. Systems exist to streamline such processes, so I reached out to www.Struct.com and asked if they could donate a basic license to their platform. Though Struct is typically marketed as a PIM (Product Information Management) system, I see it as a Master Data Management powerhouse—perfect for centralizing and coordinating all this critical information. This year, with Struct at the helm, the organization is supporting over 100 families and 180+ children, and the process has been smoother than ever. Volunteers now have a single source of truth, the ability to identify missing information at a glance, and the time to focus on what matters most: helping families in need. With many organisations struggling to get volunteers I wanted to share the importants of the little things when seeking and retaining volunteers. I volunteer in a few spaces and one is Parkrun. Generally I run but occasionally I do the pre race track check, bar code scanning and today I was a traffic marshall to keep runners safe at a point in the track where cars need to be patient as runners and walkers complete their trail. If every runner or walker volunteered twice a year we can cover the year at our local Parkrun. Parkrun is a great example of easy volunteering, it has a system used around the world and you can do it as little or as often as you like. There are many things I like about it but today I will share four things top of mind after volunteering this morning. ENCOURAGES ACTIVE BODY AND MIND It is a simple and accessible formula that encourages you to exercise your body and your mind, being part of a crew where many a great conversation is shared. SET FORMULA Today I saw a volunteer Trailwalker who I have seen do the same role at other sites over this year, what a great reason to get out of bed and explore different parts of your city. Each location has the same formula so once you know what you're doing you can confidently participate at any other parkrun across the world. IT CONNECTS PEOPLE It connects people, whether you live on your own or with others and whether you want to run, walk or volunteer there is always a place for you. GIVES YOU A GREAT START TO YOUR DAY Each week, there are runners and walkers actively thanking the volunteers for making it happen. It's got a certain buzz that not all volunteering brings. The leaders are bright, chirpy, welcoming and encouraging. And as the runners and walkers receive their times, the volunteers receive a thank you via email for volunteering each time. With all this in mind, there are things organisations can learn and switch around in their own management of volunteers based on this model. At QSI we also can assist, we can visit your organisation with fresh eyes and an improvement focus. We can identify some simple tweaks and systems that can shift gears on your volunteer experience. New government figures out last week show how being a young carer has a devastating impact on their education and prospects. 'Young carers have a persistent absence rate of 39% - almost twice as high as their peers. On average they miss 23 days of school per year, far more than those without a caring role. This lays bare the glaring inequality in the life opportunities for young carers compared to their classmates.' This week, I'm excited to be volunteering for #OpMo as a pit crew member for #CrowdstrikeRacing by #RileyTechnologiesLLC. It's an incredible opportunity to travel and learn while also giving back. Volunteering has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me, both personally and professionally.
