Exhausted, shocked and excited are big emotions...all captured in this moment yesterday. My girl, #31, got selected as 1 of 24 young people who auditioned for our local theatre panto production this December. #proudmama However the day started with a chat in the car that went: "I'm not sure I want to audition today Mummy, if I don't get through this one today how can I expect to get through an audition for Broadway???" "So you want to perform on Broadway?" "Um yeah?! (sarcastic teen eye roll like d'uh Mum!!!) "OK. That's a great ambition. So tell me how you expect to audition for Broadway if you don't audition today?" The thing she realised in that moment was that the outcome of the audition was and is irrelevant. If you have a dream you have to take small actions to achieve it. Risking rejection or failure because its an opportunity to learn, grow and fuel your fire & focus. Of course the outcome feels amazing and to achieve this on her first audition brings a huge sense of pride, achievement and confidence. But betting on yourself and going for the thing that scares you is also the thing that makes you feel alive! When you risk the vulnerability that comes with talking about emotions in the workplace you need questions that create moments of challenge, reflection and thoughtfulness. A lot us musicians and creatives have the tendency to stop our promotion immediately after they don't work. Many of us spend time developing our craft and our skills. It usually takes years to be great at what we do. However, when it comes time to promote and build our brands we run. Some of us might flounder at our first campaign to promote an film, video or album and give up. However, just like how you became a great artist at what you do the same applies on how we market yourself and your art. There are learning curves. Sometimes we don't give ourselves enough time to get the message out. However, don't just give up the first sight of slowed momentum.
