On the bright side, DC is #12 globally -- only Silicon Valley, NY, LA, and Boston beat out the DMV in the US. There is so much momentum in DC right now, but there are a couple things holding us back from moving even farther up the ranks. 1: DC is a really hard place for an early stage company to get off the ground. MD and VA (and PA, and DE, etc.) provide so many more resources and opportunities for early stage companies, and the reality is, growth stage companies will have to look outside of the region to raise larger rounds. At the very least, DC needs to follow MD and VA's lead to make this whole region an advantageous launching ground for the next groundbreaking companies. 2: "The DMV" just does not do this ecosystem justice. We need a rebrand! Starting with a catchy new name. Any thoughts?
The global startup ecosystem report just dropped here during London Tech Week, and Seattle went from #9 global ecosystem in the world in 2023 to #20 in 2024! 😳 Seattle has so much work to do rival the other innovation ecosystems in the world if we want to stay competitive. First, we must stop looking only inward, we need to be humble enough to know we have much to learn from our global counterparts. I hope next year we will be back in the top 10 and not drop out of the top 20 all together. Let’s work together Seattle. (Link to report in comments.) Startup Genome London Tech Week City of Seattle

"Tech startup ecosystems have grown faster over the last three decades than any other sector — even faster than the automotive sector 100 years ago, semiconductors, and telecom." "Corporate and university R&D has diminished in relative importance, in terms of its power to drive a city or country’s economic prosperity." "Yet, too few governments have dedicated proportionate budgets to invest in their increasingly important startup ecosystems." https://lnkd.in/g6-e9k4j #techstartups #startupnews #govtech #innovation #digitaleconomy #technologynews

Exploring Taiwan's Startup Ecosystem! I recently had the incredible opportunity provided by Startup Terrace to listen to an enlightening lecture and engage in a Q&A session with Eric (Ping-Hang) Fan, gaining deep insights into Taiwan's vibrant startup ecosystem. As of 2024, the country boasts nearly 8,000 startups. Taipei is the central hub, hosting 45.1% of startups, followed by New Taipei at 13.4%. Taiwan is rightfully a leader in microelectronics and semiconductors, with 14.7% of startups focusing on hardware and manufacturing. Healthcare and biotech follow closely at 12.1%, and IT, software, data analytics, internet services, and mobile technology comprise 11.9%. There are 93 startup hubs (!) across the island, 26% of which are in Taipei. Notably, 74% of these hubs are specialized. This means if you're developing banking solutions, you'll find a dedicated hub to meet your needs, and if you're working with AI, another tailored hub awaits you and etc. Taiwan features 78 accelerators (!), with 62% located in Taipei, and 49% of them offering specialized focus. Since 2020, the number of deals has significantly increased, particularly in green energy, and electric vehicles. In 2023, most deals were in energy, healthcare and biotech, and hardware and manufacturing sectors. Interestingly, corporate venture capital (CVC) deals account for 63.94% with an average check of $4.81 million. Guess, many companies are creating internal spin-offs, fostering their own venture narratives. Key sectors: energy, healthcare and biotech, hardware, and manufacturing. Venture capital accounts for 34.95% of deals with an average check of $6.29 million, focusing on healthcare and biotech, hardware, media, and entertainment. The first quarter of 2024 suggests a slight decline in activity (from my point of view). The influence of geopolitics or other factors remains unclear. Yet, Taiwan and its entrepreneurs continue to impress with their achievements. This is precisely why CleverPoint Neuro here — in search of new knowledge and opportunities! #TaiwanStartups #Innovation #VentureCapital #Technology #HealthTech
