Something I'm often asked by k12 visitors to Google or kids I’m mentoring is “How do I get that first job? Do I need to do internships? Do I need to do one every summer while I’m studying? What should I do to even *get* that first internship? A separate question is how you develop the skills needed to get through an interview. I’ve always just recommended practice - do coding puzzles, have pet projects, contribute to open source. https://lnkd.in/ehQMCxah is as good a source of info as any. But what about *getting* that interview in the first place as a fresh college student? I usually mutter something about contributing to Github but realize this might be rubbish advice. The truth is I don't know *what* gets you that first interview. Perhaps I should ask the experts like some of my favorite recruiters: Jen Crowley David Dawkins Karen Smith Brittany Perry... what do recruiters look for beyond GPAs in soon-to-be college grads?

Some personal news: After 16 incredible years, I’ve logged my last day at CNET. In 2008, as a college freshman, I was working the sign-in desk at a tech mixer in San Francisco. Desperate to be part of the tech community — and in need of a summer job — this is how I spent my weekday evenings. One attendee, an engineer at CNET Networks, casually suggested I see if CNET was hiring. And so I did what anyone would do at that time: I went to Craigslist. Weeks later, I started my job as a Shipping-and-Receiving Intern at CNET. Over the course of 16 years, I wrote countless articles, produced hundreds of videos, and attended many CESes. I had the privilege of launching CNET How To, Wellness, Money, and Studios. Every day was an adventure, shaping strategy, collaborating with partners, and just, creating. I built two smart homes in San Francisco. I built teams, and I lost teams. I learned a lot of things from a lot of smart people who came before me. I watched CNET flex and grow as the Internet changed, media changed, and the people who consumed it changed. A microcosm of the Internet itself, CNET is so much different than the place that intern entered 16 years ago, and it has thrived. As it enters a new era at Ziff Davis, the next class of leaders and creative minds will continue to build on CNET's success. As for me, I’ll be taking my learnings and experiences to a role that supports creators of content and the future of media. Saying goodbye to CNET wasn’t easy, but I’m excited for what comes next. P.S. Here's one of my personal highlights -- interviewing Christian Slater at Advertising Week in New York!

For sure it won’t 🔥 TBH, there’s no extent for anyone to complain, you can just go on and on. There will always be something for you to complain on. And this thought takes over you leaving you less focussed on your actions which indeed would matter. ~ Your college doesn’t rank in top-tier segments to provide bigger opportunities. ~ Your college doesn’t have any coding community or culture. ~ Your non tech background likits your shortlisting in on-campus / off-campus opportunities. ~ You’re not well informed on the learning path or resources to follow. ~ Your contribution of work goes unnoticed in the projects impacting your promotions. Situations of this kind are not common to only one individual. Infact, most things are always out of your control. You’re the only responsible person to crawl and find your way out ⚡️ Many such examples of people who have faced and worked out to the position they need to be. Certainly, it not easy! But, not always you’re given a choice to choose among. Have you been here? *** I have solved 50+ most asked JS Interview questions with detailed explanations in this book here, https://lnkd.in/gdMFzk-n P.S. Checkout previews, 200+ downloads already! 🚀

Back in my 7th semester, I was preparing and building stuff for my Final-Year Project, this guy Faisal Mehmood has guided me a lot in doing things the better* way. Also he was the one who pushed me to practice mock-interviews, taking me to the tech events, and meetups. So your friend circle really does matter, I mean surrounding yourself with people having more brighter ideas than you, and craving to grab you with themselves without any rewards or paybacks, is the best investment you made while you're struggling. Know the Personality: The man, the myth, Faisal was my batch mate, we both started together but unfortunately he got dropped out, couldn't continue due to some back logs and time concerning things. Later on, he again started his bachelors at Virtual University, reached half-way through it and works as a backend Software Engineer now. ✨ Long story, short: If you're currently pursuing or considering to start your higher education, first thing choose your majors wisely, which genuinely interests you, not anyone else. Secondly, try to build your own circle or possibly join the one which has the will to really make a change, eager to help you grow along the way. #careergrowth #community #EngineeringLife
