After the tragic death of Mike Lynch, here is media coverage of him in 2000, updated 2010 in #ManagementToday. Has the UK learnt much since then , and does the business world reflect the need for social mobility and cognitive diversity ? If short of time, here is an extract: "When I ask him who has had most influence on his business career, Lynch replies promptly: 'John Harrison.' No, not a recent management guru, but the 18th-century clockmaker who fought snobbery and convention to devise a sea-going timepiece accurate enough to enable sound longitudinal calculation. Lynch applies those same views about challenging preconceptions through to company management and recruitment. 'Things are changing in business on an amazing time scale and it's not predictable any more, so you need people who realise there are no rules about what happens next.' That is why, in running his companies, he has learnt to love outsiders, executives from other cultures who have experience of other industries. 'I love having mixtures,' he says, 'that's where you get real benefit.'" #socialmobility #tech #diversity #recruitment #entrepreneurs #business #MikeLynch https://lnkd.in/eeHWrM4q
"The tech sector prides itself on being innovative and forward-thinking, but it is dragging its heels on social mobility." 💬 Our CEO Sarah Atkinson spoke to The Times today about the barriers to careers in tech, where just 9% of employees come from a working-class background. We think the sector needs to do better. But currently, very few tech companies enter our Social Mobility Employer Index to receive bespoke advice on becoming more accessible workplaces for people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Will that change in 2025? Sign up for updates on the Index here ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eDNunVQZ

Just 9% of tech employees come from a lower socio-economic background. ⚠️ That’s much worse than the traditionally ‘elite’ professions of finance (29%) and law (23%). And it’s less than a quarter of the figure for the UK workforce as a whole (39%). Our CEO Sarah Atkinson has joined Nick Harrison of The Sutton Trust in calling on the tech industry to take action on social mobility. Read their blog for Tech Talent Charter below 👇 https://lnkd.in/e5kNNdAW Only a handful of tech employers enter the Social Mobility Employer Index to receive bespoke guidance on how to attract, retain and progress the most talented staff, not simply the most polished performers. The 2024 Index is open for entries until 7th June: https://lnkd.in/eDNunVQZ

Shaping the Future of the South-West Peninsula 🌍 I recently met the brilliant Henry Jones and was fascinated by his recent work on the future of tech and people in the South West. The technology workforce in the South-West set to expand by 26 per cent from 2022 to 2027, outpacing the growth rate of any other sector. We must ensure more young people have better pathways into digital careers. The South-West is home to nearly 18,000 tech companies supporting 170,000 employees. The problem is the lack of awareness and interest among young people, lack of employer engagement in schools and colleges, lack of knowledge about tech careers among teachers, and the rural geography of the region are key barriers hindering the development of the region’s tech workforce. Boosting skills and modernising methods of employment and recruitment is one way to tackle the low wages and productivity in the peninsula, experts have said. The report takes a vital first step of exploring the tech skills mismatch in the region and developing recommendations to ensure the benefits of this growth are equitably distributed, particularly to young people from poorer backgrounds. We need to do more, lots of good stuff included below: Link to press release: https://lnkd.in/ePNzS9hF Link to report: https://lnkd.in/eqtsJDZe #southwest #tech #nextgeneration
More tech skills needed to address the South-West’s chronic economic and social challenges, new report says - News

Only 9% of tech employees are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This compares to 39% of the UK population. The Diversity in Tech report launched today by Tech Talent Charter reveals the shocking truth about the lack of socioeconomic diversity in the tech sector. It’s down to tech employers to diversify their industry. Luckily, we’re here to help. The tech industry is one of the worst at bringing in people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Only 9% of people working in tech are from the 40% of least well off families! It’s much worse that eg. Finance and Law - which may surprise you. Part of the reason is complicated pathways into the industry and for careers thereafter. At The Sutton Trust we are working with Tech Talent Charter to figure out how to address this problem.
Did you know that only 9% of tech employees are from lower-socio economic backgrounds (compared to 39% of the UK population)? That number is even more staggering when compared to other industries (law is at 23% and finance is at 29%). The good news is that we can improve these numbers, close the tech skills shortage and create a more diverse tech ecosystem if organisations make meaningful change. The Sutton Trust runs programmes to improve social mobility and they are launching a new employer programme: a Tech Task Force on Social Mobility. If your organisation is ready to lead on social mobility, join the kick off meeting on 4th April where they will be sharing: ➡️ Why social mobility matters in tech. ➡️ The benefits of increasing socio-economic diversity. ➡️ Why we believe focussing on socio-economic diversity is important when other diversity measures need to be improved too. ➡️ What tech companies can do about social mobility. ➡️Details about the Tech Task Force on Social Mobility programme. You can't be what you can't see. 🔑 Relatable role models can be key in empowering young people to see what 'someone like me' can achieve. Young people need to see themselves reflected in industries and job roles to believe it's possible for them as well. We work with employers to increase diversity in their talent pool and work with employee volunteers to share their stories and act as relatable role models for young people from low socio-economic backgrounds. #alumni #relatablerolemodels #employerpartners

Today's report from Tech Talent Charter shows the tech industry has a serious problem with socioeconomic exclusion - just 9% of the workforce are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. There is so much wrong with this stat: it means that people from working class backgrounds are locked out from well paid, highly skilled and exciting jobs; it means that products and services we all use are being designed by people with relatively narrow experience; and it means that some of the most successful companies in the UK are failing on a key aspect of social impact. It's time for the tech sector to step up. Beyond the embarrassing headline figures, the report includes lots of practical advice and resources to support action. A key resource is the Social Mobility Employer Index - we open for 2024 entries soon and we urge tech employers to get involved and show your commitment to making change.
