How does a student’s environment shape their thinking skills? This is a topic I have been independently researching for quite some time. I actively gather insights on this at the numerous STEM events and challenges I attend/ judge, particularly at well-established schools across the country. However, when Soujanya Jandhyala invited me to judge the Build Program Showcase Event by Enabling Leadership Global, it got me excited for a different reason - the students presenting their projects came from less privileged backgrounds, unlike those from IB/IGCSE schools.  I was keen to witness their creativity and problem-solving skills, to get a deeper insight into the impact of environment at school and at home on the thinking skills. These students, armed with LEGO bricks, focused on tackling real-world issues they encounter daily. From poor network on long bridges to the need for having washrooms on the ground floor for improved accessibility and pet shelters at the railway stations, what struck me was the #empathy in all their #solutions. For a society to make true progress, we need to nurture #empatheticdesign amongst students. We already know that #STEM #education can empower students to think critically and innovate, no matter their circumstances. But it is the empathy complemented by competency and opportunities that can truly propel any country towards becoming a knowledge powerhouse in the world. JASON Educational Leadership Spotlight!✨ Say hello to Dr. Melissa Stewart, a brilliant educational leader representing JASON Learning from Ohio! 🌟 Connection to JASON: My first interaction with JASON Learning was in 2020, and we have been using this resource since 2021. 🌟 Current job title/what you're up to now: Chief Academic Officer for INDIAN HILL EXEMPTED VILLAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT 🌟 Favorite JASON memory/experience: I could share so many examples of the tiles within JASON Learning, but I would like to highlight my experience with JASON Learning from the lens of teaching and learning at the district level. First, as a member of the JASON Learning Consortium, I have made invaluable relationships with other school district personnel who also use JASON and attend the in-person convening and conferences. I now have a network of other STEM champions across the country that are active parts of my own network. JASON Learning creates an environment of collaboration that allows for these connections to start and grow. I can easily email or call another educator from across the country to get advice or inspiration. Second, the STEM designation process in partnership between JASON and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, has been foundational to establishing a STEM culture throughout our district. Not only did the rubric of self-assessment prompt important discussions for us as a district, but the individualized support and feedback from JASON personnel have allowed for future planning in a strategic and focused manner. 🌟 Advice, encouragement, and ideas to engage students in STEM education: My advice is to get involved! JASON Learning has encouraged us to practice STEM well beyond the subjects of #Science, #Technology, #Engineering, and #Math. STEM is a culture of seeing students as learners as doers, learners as individuals, and learners as the whole child. Sitting alongside some of Australia's most passionate and forward-thinking STEM educators at the recent 𝑺𝑻𝑬𝑴 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 was truly inspiring.
