🤞Never underestimate Serendipity - it is a good "force" against bad luck! Students often wonder how I won the 'Van den Kroonenbergprijs' two years ago. I usually refer them to this insightful article by Stan Waning , detailing how my career unfolded without a fixed plan. In 1990, I started on "UT Elektrotechniek" simply because my brother had pursued it. Despite discovering my disinterest in electronics, I delved into semiconductor and biomedical technology, eventually sparking a true passion. Transitioning to my first job at 3T | Electronics & Embedded Systems, we faced challenges that led us to spin out the microsystems business. Crafting my first business plan, 3T microsystems merged with Lion and evolved into LioniX International, marking my journey into entrepreneurship.... In 2013, at Uneedle, we developed a silicon needle for intradermal injections of dermal fillers. It turned out to have 'enduring sharpness', unlike standard needles that need replacement within a session. Lucky us! 🧬 Later, this feature proved perfect for multiple intradermal injections of cancer vaccines, where a high dose ('a full syringe') is emptied in multiple injections to reach multiple lymph nodes.... (it is everywhere!) 🤞Never underestimate Serendipity - it paves unexpected paths to success. Explore the full story here: https://lnkd.in/ejxvFrcH #Serendipity #PersonalGrowth

While doing #techtransfer is not easy, the US universities have done a tremendous job of taking critical technologies to market. In this segment we discuss the role of #nonprofit organizations like the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and others who have done an exceptional job of performing focused technology transfer running it like a business. This model often times works well especially in state universities allowing more autonomy to those entities. With the various types of university structures, private (e.g. Princeton University), public (e.g. University of Connecticut), public systems (e.g. University of California Office of the President and land grants, the structure matters.
Dr. DJ Nag discusses the evolution of IP management at U.S. universities following the landmark 1980 Bayh-Dole Act. This legislation fundamentally changed how universities handle IP and enables them to own and commercialize their research outcomes. Today, we're excited to share this segment with insights from Dr. DJ Nag on university intellectual property (IP) management during his talk with Yonko Chuklev from PARAi - Professional Association of Robotics, Automation and Innovations. Key Highlights: 🔵 Role of not-for-profit foundations like Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) in managing university IPs. 🔵 Process of transforming academic research into commercial successes. 🔵 Strategies universities employ to foster startup ecosystems and drive innovation through technology transfer. This video is a must-watch for anyone involved with or interested in the detailed aspects of university IP strategies and technology commercialization. In your experience, what are the most effective strategies for universities to manage intellectual property in collaboration with industry partners? Introducing Baltan’s 2024 Year Programme: Technologies Otherwise Does technology belong to us? It can feel like an autonomous force, an inevitable process we cannot stop or control. A feeling deriving from being excluded by its intentional opacity, a black box that understands us, without us understanding it. Is it magic, or is it capital? In 2024, Baltan Laboratories will practise a hopeful approach towards technology, exploring how it can help us live otherwise. If we want to believe that technology can fix it all, let us give it another try. However, we need more than one technology because the one we have is virtually singular. Our digital realm is occupied by a monopoly of a few multinationals hoarding an ever-growing pile of creativity, talent, capital and time that could be used to revolutionise it. How can we imagine a diverse and plural technological landscape resistant to the lure of capital? ➡️ At this link, the curatorial text and info about the formats included in the programme: https://lnkd.in/dk32gwXg In the next few days, Baltan social media will be populated with 6 totemic symbols (the ones in the video below), introducing the trajectories and the different formats of the programme. Technologies Otherwise is supported by Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie and Cultuur Eindhoven.

🆕 From me in Forbes: 71 Teams Seek CHIPS Act Funds To Grow Tech Sectors. Will Congress Act? The National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Regional Innovation Engines program, authorized under the CHIPS and Science Act, provides funding to grow #emergingtechnology sectors, but Congress has yet to fully fund the program. Industry, universities, and community colleges have been speaking out against NSF cuts and the lack of #CHIPS appropriations - it hasn't worked so far. Will Congress fund NSF, or will these teams be out of luck? https://lnkd.in/e8-kd8tk Council on Competitiveness Association of American Universities (AAU) Victor McCrary Federation of American Scientists Dario Gil Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU)

The technology transfer units of EASi ja KredExi ühendasutus and TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology met yesterday to discuss the potential for cooperation in the realm of Academia-Industry collaboration. We discussed themes from education efforts around IP to supporting emerging and scaling knowledge-intensive companies. We hope these kinds of discussions between both sides of the technology transfer model lead to fruitful collaborations within the tech transfer ecosystem to help valorise knowledge and intellectual assets created in Academia. More to come! Siim Kinnas
