As I think about fostering safe, inclusive environments, for our teams, our faculty, our industries, and our conference attendees, I think about the best Code of Conduct I've ever seen, which is from Lesbians Who Tech & Allies. I find their position on allyship (quoted below) particularly important and impactful, especially within my network, as a lot of us are in relatively privileged or powerful positions, which comes with, I believe, a certain obligation. Allyship is about actively reframing knowledge and actively changing power dynamics. Please engage these practices: 💡Listen and learn, even when you feel confused or uncomfortable. 📚 Educate yourself instead of asking others to educate you. 🙌 Don’t take credit for ideas originated by people on the front lines. 👀 Act like an ally when no one is watching. 🎁 Acknowledge your privilege. 💪 Be resilient. 💰 Contribute resources: Time. Yesterday, I received news that shook me. After five months of dedicated work at TechGium, our team reached the semi-finals (POC round). We poured our hearts and souls into our presentation, but fate had other plans. Just five minutes into our pitch, our hardware malfunctioned, throwing us into a frenzy. Despite scrambling to resolve the issue, we had no choice but to resort to a pre-recorded video. Adding to the pressure, delays from the previous team meant we were rushed, unable to showcase our prepared material adequately. The bitter pill to swallow? We fell short of advancing to the finals. The importance of mentorship from Dr Natarajan Somasundaram sir. My mentor provided invaluable guidance, not just in refining our presentation skills but also in navigating unexpected challenges like this. Moreover, his support extended beyond advice; he even provided the funds for the hardware we needed, demonstrating a level of commitment that's truly commendable. And thanks to my team Sree Neha, Dinesh Kumar, Lokesh Kumar K M Additionally, I extend heartfelt gratitude to Anish Leon and his team for orchestrating this wonderful event flawlessly. Yet, setbacks are not the end of the road; they're opportunities for growth. Today's disappointment fuels tomorrow's determination. We're already dissecting what went wrong, drawing lessons, and charting a stronger course forward. In the grand tapestry of success, setbacks are but small threads. During AfroTech, I had the privilege of attending a fireside chat with XEyee, who I first discovered at Investfest this past summer. Since then, I’ve been following XEyee’s journey across social media, captivated by the insights shared. In this session, XEyee explored the transformational impact of AI on both tech and culture. Those familiar with XEyee’s talks know they are filled with profound wisdom, backed by data and personal experience. One statement, however, left a lasting impression: "Our ancestors had to trade off their physical safety for our generational safety. Our ask is to trade off our psychological safety for generational safety." Take a moment to read that again and let it sink in. This statement lingered with me, making me reflect "has it really come to sacrificing psychological safety in the workplace so black and brown communities are not left behind"? This conversation solidified for me why soft skills training is so critical. It’s about building a culture where people acknowledge unconscious bias and have the courage to course correct in real-time. At the end of the day, people are the driving force behind products and services. Fostering a culture of psychological safety isn’t just a “nice-to-have”, it’s a necessity for innovation and progress. AfroTech was a powerful reminder that voices matter, and creating spaces where those voices are truly valued is a responsibility we all share. I left the conference inspired and more committed than ever to helping organizations build inclusive communities where everyone thrives.
