Detiem Tawo, Program Lead at CyberSafe Foundation, led a powerful session on Cybersecurity Essentials for Non-Profits & Social Entrepreneurs at the Online Safety Forum 2024. Cybersecurity plays a critical role in safeguarding the online presence and operations of civil society and social impact organizations. These groups often handle sensitive data and engage in advocacy that can make them targets. In Africa, the most pressing cyber safety challenges for civil societies include limited cybersecurity resources, inadequate staff training, and targeted attacks from malicious actors aiming to disrupt their work. Participants learnt actionable strategies to enhance their cyber resilience with real-world scenarios and solutions tailored to the unique needs of nonprofits and social enterprises.

In today’s digital age, cybersecurity awareness and education have become imperative for individuals and communities worldwide. However, while many resources are available in developed regions, the same cannot be said for underserved communities, particularly in Africa. Recognizing this gap, Cyber Divisions, a charity organization, has embarked on a noble mission to provide free cybersecurity education and awareness to over 1.216 billion people across the African continent.

This is an idea that may not only help smaller businesses without a cybersecurity team or similar resources, but also help train the next generation of cybersecurity pros as they move from college into the workforce. The "clinic" model may be a road map for federal agencies to help strengthen the nation's overall cybersecurity posture by incorporating small businesses and local agencies, such as school districts, into the mix. From the article: "I't isn’t easy to be a David against Goliath hackers. Small organizations—nonprofits, local public services, mom-and-pop businesses—don’t have the cybersecurity resources to put up much of a defense. But thanks to a new initiative, help for such groups is increasingly available—from college students. Similar to clinics in which law and medical students perform pro bono services, university-based clinics around the country staffed by students now give cybersecurity assessments, training and other help to groups with little in the way of such resources.'" #cybersecurity #cybersecurityawareness #cybersecurityprofessionals #smallbusiness #smallbusinessowners #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #veteranowned #veteranownedbusiness

"With great power comes great responsibility." - Uncle Ben A few months ago, I received a call from a dedicated member of OTI - The Israeli Autism Association. They had noticed suspicious activity in their email system and had heard about OP Innovate's Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) services. Without hesitation, Omer Pinsker, Ben B., Mickey Alton, and I decided to help. In our free time, we thoroughly investigated the situation to ensure the organization's data was secure. We also conducted a penetration test to confirm that the attacker would not find another way in. It's infuriating to think someone would target a non-profit organization that supports autistic children. If I could, I would confront the attacker personally for attempting to harm such a noble cause. At OP Innovate, we always stand by those who need cyber protection the most. If you are a non-profit organization facing cybersecurity challenges, feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn. #CyberSecurity #PenetrationTesting #DFIR #NonProfitSupport #OPInnovate

Food banks, shelters, afterschool programs, and advocacy groups provide essential services but often struggle to defend against cyberattacks due to limited funding and IT resources. A new study from UC Berkeley's Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity and the City of San Francisco highlights these challenges and examines how cities can step up for local cyber defense. "One of the big things about this study in particular is it represents a big narrative shift in the role cities play in cybersecurity," Sarah P. said. "Cities are often thought of as ransomware victims. We're really trying to push for the idea that large cities, that capable cities, can play this role as a local hub of cyber defense."
