Imagine it’s your sister's wedding and you’ve volunteered to bake the cake for it. You’ve never baked a wedding cake before but you figure you know roughly what is required for a wedding cake and it should go well. You fancy yourself as a bit of a star baker, actually. This is your chance. You read up on lots of different types of cakes, watch a ton of youtube videos and and spend loads of money getting the best ingredients possible for the cake. A couple of days before the wedding you start to actually bake it. A four-tier gourmet cake with some sort of fancy filling (I don’t know anything about cakes, you can use your imagination). It takes you AGES, you are super stressed, up all night, but you get it done. The day of the wedding comes and you're proud as punch. But your sister’s partner is allergic to nuts (the cake is FULL of nuts), so they can't physically go near it. No 'cut the cake'. And actually the cake is truly disgusting so no one ends up eating it anyway. The whole thing gets tossed aside. All your hard work. Blood sweat and tears. You didn’t check in with the guests and their dietary requirements. You didn’t do any test of the cake, you just hypothesised and researched. Yes you put a ton of effort into building it, but you still built something no one wanted. What a waste of time, money, and energy! Had you baked little batches of your cake before the big day and tested them continuously, you would have known that your future in-law was allergic to nuts, you would know that it tasted bad the first time, and you would not have ruined your chances of being the star baker in this town forever more! Basically what I'm saying is: don't let your tech product go down like that cake. Come to the webinar next week where I'll help you avoid wasted time, money and energy on your tech product! Over the summer, I enhanced my skills in Digital Culture and Data Analysis as part of my Capstone minor, culminating in a final project that allowed me to explore a subject that interested me. Throughout the course, I completed labs that sharpened my abilities in data visualization and analysis using Python, as well as website development with HTML/CSS. My final project was an exciting opportunity to merge my passion for advertising with data analysis. The unifying theme you might ask? Beer! My project, Unlock the World of User-Generated Content: Marketing for Beer Brands, delves into why this modern approach to advertising is essential for beer brands. What makes enjoying a beer so special? It’s the shared experience. Beer brands thrive on fostering camaraderie, something that can no longer be effectively conveyed through traditional advertising like billboards. In today’s world, storytelling, not just selling products, is what resonates. It’s not about marketers talking to us; it’s about real people sharing their experiences. Everything must be relatable. Now is the time for brands to embrace user-generated content, inviting the community of beer enthusiasts to become active participants in their story. Business is hard. There are days where you want to pack it in because a client is upset, or the tool isn't as easy as it was sold as. It happens. Bad days make the good days better... or something like that? When that happens, I try to switch my brain over to gratitude mode. "This sucks... but you know what doesn't?" And I review a list of Who and/or What am I thankful for. Today, as we start our Summer 2024 season at SupercityOS, I'm gratitude for 2 things: 1. An awesome team who I know care about making sure we always do the right thing not just for our clients but one another. 2. Our Jura coffee machine. It just makes such great coffee and is so easy to run!
