Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and an ecosystem of interconnected wearable devices are converging resulting in a wave of innovation that will redefine our relationship with everything. “I want Europe to become an AI continent,” Virkkunen tells the Parliament. The EU’s AI rulebook, the AI Act, must be “swiftly implemented as an enabler,” she says." It's encouraging to hear that Henna Virkkunen clearly recognizes that the EU can not win human-centric AI without a step change in the use of it. The figures are extremely disturbing: only 8% of EU companies made use of AI in 2023. We look forward to supporting the implementation of the AI Act as an enabler. The key is already locked in the AI Act text itself: governance that is proportionate to the risk level of the system. There's no one t-shirt size for good AI governance. The responsible AI winners will apply the right level of risk management to keep risks in control, and the capability to do this at scale will differentiate whether AI regulations and governance will become your enabler or your Achilles heel. The start of the AI Act implementation looks quite promising. A couple of personal observations: 🔦Companies choose to do AI risk management not for compliance but for systematic control of business risks involved with their AI use - practically, this means risk management is becoming standard practice of not only high-risk systems but across the AI inventories; 🔦My feeling is that the European Commission's estimate of the share of high-risk systems (5-15%) might be higher than the actual real-life situation but naturally, it is too early to draw any final conclusions and time will show as more companies establish AI inventories with solid system classifications. A few weeks ago, we sent Henna a pair of six-finger gloves as a reminder of the criticality of implementing the AI Act in an innovation-friendly way.
