The Virtual Mill, a virtual environment, developed by Elomatic and Valmet enables factory workers to explore their work environments virtually. 👩🏭🖥 Virtual environment for the factory enables various training contents, such as animations and interactivity. It is already in use with several Valmet customers. “We have gained tremendous assistance from Virtual Mill in training. Employees can virtually inspect their work environment, gaining a realistic understanding of proportions,” says Jari Schuurman, Training Specialist at Valmet. "Get your hands dirty!" Experience means participation, means feeling what it is, means going through it and living what is like to make a product a reality. Go and talk to operators, technicians, help fixing machines and product problems. Talk to customers and explain what is going on (learning by teaching). Ron's Response:🎙 It is easy to be critical during simulator training because of the complexity of our processes and the fact there is so much going on. Remember to acknowledge when something is noticed or dealt with correctly. The intent is to help them develop a thought process. It may seem helpful to point out every mistake, but it is better to help them understand how they arrived at their conclusions and to ask if there may be other information that would be useful. (I must remind myself of this last paragraph frequently). When they are missing something, become curious about it. Explore their understanding and how they may have missed the important information. Although some pressure is required during training to keep the trainee engaged, the ability to reason declines when stress becomes too high. I was honestly surprised to see the president of the company join the initial discovery call He was in his 70’s and although AI is top of mind for everyone, he didn’t strike me as an early adopter. I start the call asking them about their challenges. He cuts his team off. “We’ve got a new technician team in a foreign market, that isn’t ramping quick enough. I’ve got a team of experts halfway across the world that aren’t thrilled about being awake at 2 AM to answer dumb questions. We’ve got millions of dollars of equipment sitting idle. How does your AI make technicians experts?” The frustration in his tone told me that clearly this was not the first call discussing this. The traditional training approaches hadn’t worked. Now, I've seen this time and time again: business owners stepping in because recruiting, training, and retaining technician talent has become a bottleneck to growth. In the past, technicians often came into the business with a strong foundation in mechanical skills, having grown up working on cars or machines. That’s no longer the norm. With a shortage of skilled technicians and vocational schools struggling to keep up with demand, companies are faced with the challenge of quickly upskilling new hires in complex roles. As I listened to the team describe the issues technicians were facing, I jotted down their concerns. Expertise, after all, isn’t just about knowledge—it’s about having the right information at the right time. For technicians working on complex machinery, retaining every detail from a classroom setting isn’t realistic. What they need is access to just-in-time training, enabling them to act with confidence in the moment About eight minutes into the call, I noticed the president was losing focus. I pulled up my phone to demonstrate how the technicians could receive instant, context-specific information in their native language (see video). The president’s attention returned. After a few more questions, he interrupted his team again, this time with a simple directive: “Let’s give this a try.”
