ARI-5G results. ARI-5G (Accelerating RAN Intelligence in 5G) was a consortium-led initiative that focused on enhancing the management and operation of 5G Radio Access Networks (RANs). The initiative aimed to demonstrate the successful interoperability of components developed to OpenRAN standards. Central to its objective was the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), a crucial element for supporting increased levels of network automation. The RIC provided fine-grained, use case-driven control and management of RAN resources. The consortium implemented, tested, and demonstrated a standards-based RIC platform with specific software solutions known as 'xAPPs and rAPPs', leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to optimize RAN operations. ARI-5G explored several facets of network optimization, including capacity and coverage optimization, interference mitigation and management, mMIMO, spectrum efficiency, and energy management and power savings. The initiative involved indoor/outdoor deployments of a standalone 5G network in a simulator and an outdoor physical network, located at BT’s Adastral Park test facility and underpinned by AttoCore’s Release 16 Next Generation Core (NGC). Consortium partners, including Amdocs, contributed to the acceleration of Open RAN deployment. In summary, ARI-5G accelerated the development and deployment of intelligent RAN solutions, paving the way for more efficient and optimized 5G networks of the future.
