The impact of batteries on the clean energy transition is closely linked to advances in battery technology and performance, including higher energy densities, faster charging rates, and longer cycle lifespans. The current EV and energy storage battery market is dominated by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. The most commonly used chemistries for cathodes include nickel manganese cobalt oxides (NMC), lithium iron phosphate (LFP), and nickel cobalt aluminum oxides (NCA), with graphite as the primary choice for anodes. Lithium batteries will lose some active lithium during the first cycle, thereby reducing the battery's energy density and cycle life. This problem can be effectively solved through lithium replenishment technology, such as the use of lithium replenishment additives such as LFO. LFO, the chemical formula is Li5FeO4. This material is regarded as an ideal pre-embedded lithium additive. The massive price reductions over last few years have definitely led to an increase in market size for Lithium batteries. This is now helping usher in the new wave of cleaner power with large and small scale battery storage projects becoming grid competitive. It is expected that in a couple of years with further reductions in renewable generation costs as well as battery storage costs these systems will become cheaper than the Grid.
