Reflecting on My First 6 Months as Director of Engineering, AI at Splunk: As I reflect on my first six months at Splunk in Hyderabad, I’m excited to share some key milestones and experiences from this journey. While leading AI/ML teams is not new to me—I’ve had the privilege of doing so for a few years—joining Splunk marked a new chapter, both in terms of industry and team development. Moving from e-commerce to providing digital resilience and stepping into a leadership role for a new, growing team presented unique challenges and opportunities. One of my first key conversations was with Hao Yang (VP, AI Org), who set a clear direction for our AI strategy, with a focus on building a strong team in Hyderabad. The goal was ambitious: onboard 10 ML engineers within a quarter. Thanks to our recruiting team and a couple of ML engineers from Hyderabad along with strong collaboration from our US-based teams, we were able to follow an aggressive interview pipeline. By the end of my first three months, our team had grown to six, and we took on an exciting challenge: the handover of the ML Toolkit (MLTK) product from our US team. MLTK is one of the most widely used products at Splunk, and my team quickly integrated with the US engineers, contributing to a release. While I was focused on hiring, the team got up to speed with MLTK and began shaping the engineering roadmap. Another highlight was attending the AI leadership offsite in the US, where I gained deeper insights into our AI initiatives, including AI assistants for Security & Observability. This trip not only strengthened cross-functional relationships but also provided clarity on how we align on strategic priorities across the AI org. In the second half of the six months, our focus continued to be on hiring and scaling. We also took on an exciting new project—based on ChatGPT, an AI summary generator—expanding our capabilities even further. We recently released a new version of MLTK, and with 13 engineers now onboard, we are ready to build on this momentum. Our next focus will be on expanding our team in Hyderabad, driving core AI engineering initiatives, and developing GenAI-powered AI assistant products. And yes, we’re still hiring—this time with a focus on LLM foundational skills!
