Today's session was very insightful and exciting with learnings about Facial Recognition technology & its types: Facial Recognition Technology:🙂 Facial recognition is a technology that's used to identify individuals by analysing physiological or behavioral characteristics. (eg: using their fingerprints, hands, eyes, irises, voice, face) Types of Facial Recognition Technologies: Verification: - This type of facial recognition technology uses one to one matching - The systems using this type of technology tries to determine whether a face matches a single facial template that is often saved on a device - Example-1: Our smart phones, laptops, allows us to log onto our devices more securely using this technology. - Example-2: This technology can also be used to match against a passport for airport clearance Identification: - This type of facial recognition technology uses one to many matching - The systems using this type of technology tries to determine whether a face matches any facial template in a database of individuals - These databases can be of any size, sometimes running into millions of images - Example-1: This technology is used by the police and private security to locate people of interest in a crowd - Example-2: The camera can pick a person from the people walking across the street and post combining that with CCTV, scanning the crowds, and then matching their face against a known database of suspects or people of interest, the suspect can be identified Categorisation: - This type of facial recognition technology is used to match general characteristics and assists in extracting information about an individual's characteristics also called as face analysis - Such characteristics can predict from the facial images someone's sex, age, and even their ethnic origin - Identification of an individual could be possible, if several characteristics can be inferred from a phrase and potentially linked to other data, for example, location data Some of my key takeaways from this session are: - Biometric data if used for verification of an individual will not be treated as Special Category Data - Biometric data if used for identification of an individual will be treated as Special Category Data and hence will require an exemption prior to its processing Finally, my AHA moment from my session which Jamal Ahmed CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT, FIP conveyed us was: We should use the words "I want to do - which comes from inspiration" and will yield better results rather than "I need to do - which comes from desperation" Look out for my next couple of posts where I will be focusing on my key learnings on the European Institutions.

Malaysia adopts Worldcoin for personal verification and digital ID Malaysia aims to tackle national challenges and unlock economic opportunities by adopting cutting-edge biometric verification technology. Malaysia has adopted Worldcoin’s controversial iris-scanning technology for personal verification. The Worldcoin Foundation, Tools for Humanity (TFH) and MyEG have signed a memorandum of understanding with MIMOS Berhad, the Malaysian government’s application research and development department. Collaboration areas This collaboration aims to integrate Worldcoin technology into Malaysia’s digital infrastructure, enhancing the verification of digital credentials. The partnership involves using TFH’s iris imaging technology, developed for Worldcoin, to verify individuals’ identities — referred to as “proof of humanness.” This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve digital credential work within the country.
